My angels!! TGIF!!! I have a v exciting weekend that I cannot wait to recap with you (it consists of me attending a Taylor Swift Red x Olivia Rodrigo SOUR party and how could that be anything less than a dream?)
Yesterday I dropped Squish off to the airport for him to go and live his #vanlife dream in the states for a while, but before he left we recorded a really good episode of The Shit Show for you, explaining everything you need to know about Roe V. Wade (Nick is now fully prepped for any conversation he might get into with Americans on either side of this debate.) Anyway, you should listen to it, and I love you 💓💓💓

Abortion rights? More like abortion wrongs
I feel that it is my duty, as your pal and your daily news-bringer, to make sure that before I head out for the weekend you are as equipped and up to date as possible on the whole America-moving-backwards-on-abortion thing as can be, in case you find yourself having conversations about it IRL. So first of all, Squish and I sat down and recorded a whole ass explainer on it for you.

Today we're explaining to you the incredibly important (and terrifying) situation in the US - the potential overturning of Roe V Wade and a backwards step for the country (and the right to choose). We explain what Roe V Wade is, what will happen if this draft decision goes through (or something similar) and how soon we could be seeing a US where it's incredibly hard to access safe abortions. We also chat about the 'pro-life' Spiderman, how Delta airlines are killing bees, and Ed Sheeran's latest single - co-written on the front lines of the war in Ukraine.
Truly, we tried to answer most of the top-level questions that you might have, as always, in words you’ll understand!
I also wanted to pop in this little graph that I shared to our Instagram yesterday, of what the states would look like going forward, should Roe V. Wade be overturned, coz it’s pretty jarring:
Something else: it seems like Joe Biden is less conflicted on his stance on abortion these days, taking on a new role as abortion defender - AKA - he actually said the word ‘abortion’ for the first time in his presidency.
And now some ways you can help:
Here’s a HUGE doc (being updated 24/7) about all the ways you can help/ donate + any questions you might have
This document rounds up how you can support access to safe abortion with pre-written copy for state-by-state awareness
Here’s where you can locally donate
The true Covid death rate could be around 15 million
The WHO have just come out and estimated that the Covid 19 pandemic has killed about 15 million people worldwide, which is more than double what the official death toll says (which is over 6 million.)
How do the WHO know?
“WHO tasked scientists with determining the actual number of COVID-19 deaths between January 2020 and the end of last year. They estimated that between 13.3 million and 16.6 million people died either due to the coronavirus directly or because of factors somehow attributed to the pandemic’s impact on health systems, such as cancer patients who were unable to seek treatment when hospitals were full of COVID patients.
Based on that range, the scientists came up with an approximated total of 14.9 million.”
How did we get this number?
“The estimate was based on country-reported data and statistical modeling, but only about half of the countries provided information. WHO said it wasn’t yet able to break down the data to distinguish between direct deaths from COVID-19 and those related to effects of the pandemic, but the agency plans a future project examining death certificates.”
Important to note: "The measure used by the WHO is called excess deaths - how many more people died than would normally be expected based on mortality in the same area before the pandemic hit."
Why is the official number so much lower?
It largely comes down to inaccurate reporting by countries, due to a lack of testing - data is simply missing.
Obviously, all numbers/ studies like this are an approximation - and studies like this can be contro, but it might be helpful to note that other studies have been done on the true estimated death toll from Covid-19, and they have come up with similar numbers.
Taylor Swift is gonna screen ‘All Too Well’ at the Tribeca film festival
And I am gonna scream 'All Too Well' at the club this weekend. JK… unless???? Anyway, here’s the event description - she’s also gonna do 60 mins of pure speaking which I would KILL to see.
Spotify becomes first music streamer to launch on Roblox
Yay! Weird tech/gaming news! Spotify has just announced that they’re gonna have an official presence within Roblox. They’re launching ‘Spotify Island’ which is ‘a place where artists and fans will gather to play interactive quests, unlock exclusive content and buy artist merchandise.’ Sounds super metaverse-y and I need a kid to get on and test it out for me.
Making Sense Of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard
New episode of Culture Vulture! — open.spotify.com
For this week's episode of Culture Vulture we discuss the trial taking the internet by storm - Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard. We give a whole lot of context, explain why this trial is being filmed and broadcast, and go into the background of each person involved, to try and help explain how we got where we got today. We talk a lot about mental health, the complexities of abuse, and why we should take this opportunity to watch and learn from this trial, without feeling the need to take a side. I highly encourage tuning in if you want a well-rounded view of what we know so far.
What do you call this?
Here in NZ we call it an ice-block, but I got ROASTED on twitter for saying that the other day:
So I did a poll about it and here are the results:
28% popsicle
23% ice pop
17.5% iceblock
8.5% ice lolly
2.5% icee
2% freezie
1.5% ice cream
17% other (but most of these ‘other’ people said a one that was listed on the page beforehand, like ‘popsicle’)
