✨Help us support Kiwi kids ✨
We are incredibly proud to be bringing you this section of the newsy in partnership with the wonderful charity KidsCan, backed by their Principal Partner Meridian Energy.
This is one of the most important partnerships we do here at SYSCA, so we’re proud to be once again partnering with KidsCan - an Aotearoa-based charity dedicated to helping Kiwi kids affected by poverty - to see how our community can help to support kids who are currently going without.
First of all, I have to say thank you so much for your generosity so far - the SYSCA community never fails to floor us with how gorgeous you are, with people who aren’t even from New Zealand chipping in to help our very own Kiwi kids.
This year we’ve been talking about the cost of living crisis a bunch, and according to teachers, it’s turned into a cost of learning crisis for our kids:
“We have more and more children that are coming to school every day without kai, or without enough kai, families who don’t have the resources to feed them. They can’t focus, can’t engage in their learning. We've got one family that was sleeping in a friend's house in the backyard in a tent. We have children in winter without shoes or warm clothing.” – Principal from KidsCan partner school.
Staff at schools on the KidsCan waitlist have spoken out about how hunger is affecting our kids - and not just in the ways that we expect:
"Families are having to ration food, and it's really sad.. I don't think we realise how hunger affects our kids. Not just their behaviour, but their want to be here, their want and need to learn." - Social worker at a KidsCan partner school.
So this year, we’re asking again, if you have the means to donate $15 a month (that’s giving up only three coffees) you can help give a child a nutritious breakfast, snacks, and lunch. Or make a one-off donation - every bit helps.
Please, if you can, donate today!
Huw Edwards has been named as the BBC presenter facing allegations
Surprise surprise, we’ve got another update on the BBC saga. We now know that the presenter facing allegations, and a few more details. Here’s a summary from the BBC:
Huw Edwards has been named as the BBC presenter facing allegations over payments for sexually explicit images
His wife Vicky Flind issued a statement on his behalf, saying he was "suffering mental health issues" and is now receiving in-patient hospital care
The BBC is facing fresh allegations of inappropriate behaviour by Edwards towards more junior staff
Two current BBC workers and one former member of staff said they had been sent messages that made them feel uncomfortable
Earlier, detectives from the Met Police ended their assessment into the original allegations and determined there was no evidence of a criminal offence
The BBC says it is now resuming its investigation "whilst continuing to be mindful of our duty of care to all involved.”
Culture Vulture: The Truth About Barbie
This week on the mic: Keke Palmer clapping back to her baby daddy in the BEST way, Zayn on Call Her Daddy, and a new Britney Spears book. Then, the main event, EVERYTHING you need to know about Barbie (including some stuff you may not have known…. )
Zayn went on Call Her Daddy and it’s just… wild to see him give an interview after six years
He opens up about leaving One Direction, fatherhood, and the incident between him and Yolanda Hadid, among other things. You should listen if u want:
Elon Musk has unveiled a new AI startup
Because of course he has. Musk’s new startup is called xAI (not to be confused with one of his children’s names) and its goal is “to understand the true nature of the universe.” We don’t know much more than that, except that the team of 12 that he’s gathered to work there are all men ʘ‿ʘ
