What a full-on day I had yesterday!!! It started with you all as it usually does, and then for once all three of the SYSCA girlies were in the office (no working holidays at the moment which is weird for us!!!) I had the dentist booked at 11:30 (yes I am still on my dentist journey) and I completely forgot that I had it, so when Rubes offered me a Mackintosh (like the chewiest, toffiest lolly I could have possibly had) I accepted, before taking two chews and realising that I HAD THE DENTIST AND THIS WAS NOT WHAT I SHOULD BE DOING PRE-DENTIST. Anyway, I spat it out, and Ruby, ever the bestest/grossest friend in the world, told me not to worry because she’ll still eat it. She’s a real 'waste not want not' girlie and we love her for that!
Anyway, I went to the dentist under the impresh that it was a hygienist appointment and was gonna be super chill… it was actually two fillings and an incredibly numb mouth that followed. It was fine (albeit.. expenny) but I was NOT mentally prepared for that going in, and then I went back into the office I stayed masked up because I was so self-conscious of my numb mouth.
My next bit of admin for the day was getting my silly lil warrant of fitness for my silly little car (fun fact about me, growing up one of my weekend jobs was working at a vehicle testing station - I’d give out the pass/ fail stickers and enter all the stuff into the machine. (Other fun fact, Rubes and I shared this job, and they would give away Mackintosh’s in a lil jar so we had a HUGE bucket of them under our desk and honestly… we ate SO many of them and we’d constantly be dealing with people with mouths FULL OF LOLLIES.) (We were/ are/ will continue to be incredibly unprofesh.)
Anyway, every time I go to get something done to my car I basically expect that because I’m a young woman I’m gonna get scammed into needing ✨something done✨but my lil car actually passed with flying colours and it feels nice to know I don’t have to go and do that again for a year.
That feels like enough about me, but you also had a bit to say to me yesterday! A few of you thought that when I was talking about professional punning I was talking about professional PRUNING and I’m obsessed:
Gabriela said:
Hey Luce!
I KNOW you said punning throughout the whole lead up and newsy but I swear to you I read competitive PRUNING so I scrolled down expecting to find various pictures of hedges shaped into different animals and maybe a speed TikTok or two and was THOROUGHLY confused when the whole section was you making puns (I’ve got to mention they were top tier with just the right amount of dad-ness to them) but my brain went “hey - where is the hedge giraffe”
Here’s one for you -
Also, from Sinead:
“Just read this mornings newsy and thought you wanted to do competitive pruning!! Thought that’d make you smile.”
It did in fact make me smile, yes.
Also, on the topic of odd competitions, newsy reader Sam said:
“A guy I used to work with actually won the international egg throwing competition! In fact he missed what should have been his first day at work with all of us cause he was in Europe competing. Go NZ!!!”
Love all of this so much!!! And finally, from you, we had a bit of a 'cats with glasses' moment yesterday in the inbox, so:

The Academy Apologizes to Sacheen Littlefeather for Discrimination and Harassment at the 1973 Oscars
Liv and I talked about this in our episode of Culture Vulture about the fucked up history of the Oscars, but for anyone who hasn't listened to that yet, I'll give you a little refresher about what happened to Sacheen Littlefeather at the 1973 awards. Sacheen Littlefeather (Apache and Yaqui, from Arizona) was a then 26-year-old actress and activist, and when Marlon Brando won the 'Best Actor' award for his role in The Godfather, he asked her to go up and decline it on his behalf. Sacheen, instead of accepting the award, "read a 60-second improvised nonacceptance speech to protest the treatment of Native Americans in the film industry and the standoff between law enforcement and the activist organization American Indian Movement at Wounded Knee, South Dakota."
After making that speech, Sacheen was met with mixed responses from the crowd (some were downright awful) and she was both belittled and shunned by the entertainment industry. According to the apology:
"This moment resulted in her being professionally boycotted, personally attacked and harassed, and discriminated against for the last 50 years."
And when Sacheen spoke to the BBC in 2020 she said:
"straight after the speech she had to leave the stage with two security guards. But, she added, it "was a very good thing" as actor John Wayne was backstage (secured by six security men); she said he was "furious with Marlon and furious with me" and wanted to pull her off stage himself."
Now, about 50 years later, the academy has issued an apology for her mistreatment, and in response, she said: "We Indians are very patient people - it's only been 50 years!"

No words, just:
Scotland Makes Period Products Free!!
Some news we love to see: Scotland is the first country in the world to make period products free!! About two years after the legislation to make period products free was approved, it's happening - and here's how it's going to work:
People can find the nearest location with free period products through a mobile app called PickupMyPeriod. The app allows users to filter which products are available and how to find them at the location. Home delivery is also available.
Right now it looks like it's just tampons and pads, but how amazing would it be if they extended into products like period cups & underwear (for long-lasting use!?) One step at a time though, this is so great!
Some nerdy and interesting research about how we consume video
I thought I'd share with you this research that I read about the trends on Youtube at the moment, because I'm always trying to understand us/ the world a bit more, espesh when it comes to how we consume content (it's kinda my job!!)
Some things it points out (some that we defs already knew):
'Fan culture' content is king (duh)
There's been a rise in video essays (the example is a review that someone did of Sally Rooney and... so true - I would watch that.) I also think this would have a lot to do with the move to online learning and people having to write their own essays and either wanting to research on Youtube (or wanting to plagiarise??)
People are still keen on long-form stuff (news to me but #jealous)
Maybe this is interesting to you, maybe it isn't... maybe I should have just turned this into a video essay.
