Everything we know about Luigi Mangione, the suspected UnitedHealthcare CEO assassin
+ A close reading of his Goodreads account, and was he really a Gleek?
Hi angels!!!! Suprise - over the past few days I’ve been moving into a new home in Põneke (Wellington!!!!) I’ve moved into a beautiful house with a beautiful garden and beautiful views, but most importantly, with the best people ever!!
Here’s a little peek (featuring Abby, one of my besties and SYSCA’s sexy designer)
It’s only a 20 minute flight from my family (and my cat) and since we know I need a small town in my life to keep my brain functioning, I’ll be back there all the time.
And if you’re a Close Friend you’ve already seen a bunch more of the house, but stay tuned for a house tour!!!!

Everything we know about the suspected UnitedHealthcare CEO assassin
I’ll tell you what, this is the type of story that makes me glad that I haven’t yet left Twitter. It’s crazy on there.
Anyway, to catch you all up, police have arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione and charged him with the murder of UnitedHealthcare's chief executive, Brian Thompson. How was he finally found, you ask? He was recognised at a McDonalds and in his possession was a ‘ghost gun’ and a three-page handwritten document that indicated "motivation and mindset." While we don’t know the contents of the doc, a senior law enforcement official told the New York Times it said: "These parasites had it coming" and "I do apologise for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done".
Here’s what else we know about Luigi:
He graduated from the Gilman School (a private boys' institution in Maryland) in 2016 as valedictorian
He then graduated from the University of Pennslyvania, completing both a master's and bachelor's of science in computer engineering within four years. His concentration, or major, was in artificial intelligence, and his minor was in mathematics.
He’s related to a prominent family in Maryland that owns country clubs, healthcare facilities and real estate companies in the Baltimore area
It’s been widely reported that Luigi dealt with severe, and often debilitating back pain. “Friends have told US media he had surgery on his back. The background image on an X account believed to belong to Mangione shows an x-ray of a spine with hardware in it.”
He’s a cousin of Maryland state delegate Nino Mangione, who represents some parties in Baltimore County
He is an avid reader with 295 books listed on what we can assume is his Goodreads account. Here’s an EXCELLENT close reading of the books on there, but here are some of his relevant ratings/ commentary:
Apparently he is bisexual and an Arianator
He has a self-professed PHD
And finally, he’s a certified Gleek
In terms of the legal stuff, the latest is that Mangione is being held without bail, and and did not enter a plea in his first court appearance. “He faces five charges, including one felony count of forgery and one felony count of carrying a firearm without a licence, according to the criminal complaint.”
Obviously, I’ll keep you updated, as this has turned into, oh, only the biggest story of the year!

All the things I love about you
Good morning crushes <3. Reporting live from my sickbed this week, after catching covid on a plane back from having too much of a good time, where I have also randomly gotten really into rewatching House of Cards in some kind of desperate attempt to understand American politics (?!).
This Chime, I'm getting sentimental as the year comes closer to an end, of all the things that make me lol and swoon about writing for you.
ANYONE who has bought our book, naturally.
At one event Luce and I did this year a girlie caught a two-hour train to stand in the freezing cold and hope to get into the bookstore in time and then stayed until the store was closing. We love you!
The voice notes you send me before going on dates. I'm obsessed with them and honoured to receive them and am subsequently deeply invested in your romantic endeavours.
The girlies who've DM’d me asking where a dress I wore in a photo I posted in 2021 was from. The stalking. The gumption.
You are VERY kind about our unhinged and reckless use of spelling and punctuation.
One person once asked me to stop referring to my 'naughty ciggies with friends' as I was glamourising smoking. For that, I'm truly sorry.
Seeing phoenixing pop up outside of here in general conversation. And ESPECIALLY those of you who've sent me videos from a dance floor somewhere, yelling into the camera 'We're phoenixing!' I love you. You're welcome.
On this, just literally anyone who loves and uses the words we make up
The person who got a drawing I did as a tattoo. Chic <3.
The grandmother who printed off a Chime once and put it in an envelope for her granddaughter to read during her first week at college.
The two postgraduate university theses these Chimes have ended up in <3.
When a stranger sends me something and says, 'This is so Luce and Bel coded'.
The love interest who, earlier this year, categorically went through everything I've ever written online and formulated a detailed list of questions based on what he'd read for our first date. Truly freaked me out about the lurking power of the internet. Blessings.
Anyone, and I truly mean ANYONE who has messaged me/us about the book - the most heartfelt ones never fail to make me cry and if both the internet and words can do that, it makes me feel like the world might just be a gentle and powerful place underneath all that chaos.
Sending wishes from afar! See you this weekend for some more advice and existentialisms. Xo
