Horny Duolingo & ✨Nostalgia✨
🚙We're in Dunedin!🚙
Today we're gonna be having our coffee catch up at Allpress Dunedin Roastery from 7:30-9am! No pressure to stay for the whole time, just come, have a filter coffee on us, and say hey!! 💘
Is it day 10 of the roadie?? It must be. God - feels like we've been out here for a lifetime!!! Yesterday we started the day in our gorg Christchurch campsite, before a quick meeting with Dylan - our accountant (always a great way to start the day) (genuinely - we love Dyl to death) and then we headed to an event with the University of Canterbury's Media and Communications society. Honestly - these events (which are mostly Q&A's) are so cool and SO fun, and all of you have such amazing questions for us, that you've made it such a pleasure! Then Ben picked us up from outside the uni in our camper (hilarious) and we got on the road to Dunedin!! We used this time to do some much-needed ACTUAL WORK (replying to emails, editing podcasts, writing newsies) before arriving to our cute holiday park and heading out to the Esplanade for dinner!!
PS, here's yesterday's day in the life and the voiceover is really funny:
A day in the life!!! The busiest day yet in Christchurch meeting the most AMAZING people in the world 💘 — www.tiktok.com

Greta Thunberg will NOT be going into politics
Greta Thunberg, climate activist and legend, has said in a recent interview that she will not be pursuing a career in politics because it's too 'toxic.'
My first (and overarching) thought about this is: fair enough! Politics can be toxic, and there are often ways to make a lot of change outside of pursuing what seems like quite a soul-sucking career. Also, it's your life and you deserve to do whatever the hell you want!!! Greta never set out to be the face of such a huge global movement, and I can't imagine the pressure she must feel to just work and work and work on this thing that has become her entire life/ brand.
I kinda LOVE what she said here:
"Sometimes I can snap. I say, 'If you think that all the hope in the world rests on burned-out teenagers' shoulders, I mean, that's not very good.'''
And when she was asked about how it felt when Donald Trump and Vladdy Putin came for her:
"I just think it's genuinely funny," she said. "I mean, the most powerful people in the world feel intimidated by teenagers. That is funny. It says more about them than it does about me."

Rex Orange County & Brad and Angelina - Culture Vulture — open.spotify.com
We're on the road so the pod is a little bit different this week - we just bring you two stories from the news cycle that we want to unpack. First, the allegations made against Alexander O'Connor, known on stage as Rex Orange County, and then we cover some updates in Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's custody battle. Also, tune in to hear about Luce's developing obsession with Matty Healy!

Dunc really didn’t want his lil newsy segment to be named this (despite him being the biggest basketball fan I know), but it was too good of a pun to pass up, so I did it anyway (who’s the editor here???) Dunc is freakishly smart about… most things (I love it the most when he talks about music or media tho), and is also the founder of The Spinoff & host of The Fold, so when you’ve finished reading this, there’s plenty more Dunc out there for you xxx
Growing up as an intense and objectively annoying 90s teen, one of the key parts of my identity was an intense dislike for nostalgia. At the time the culture of the 60s and 70s felt like it was everywhere – particularly in music, which was the form which hit me the hardest (and still does tbh). A whole strand of magazines seemed to permanently rotate the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Elton John on the cover, and the unmissable implication was: it was all so much better before you were born. (Also, lads, lads, lads!) Which seemed to me to really kill culture – why bother to make anything new if it was perfected years ago?
When I met Lucy this was one of the main things we disagreed on – I wheeled out my argument, and even as I said it I realised I sounded kinda bizarre. It was a very monoculture argument, when there really were limited magazine pages and slots on music TV shows. Now with all culture available at all times on all platforms, nostalgia intertwines with cultural discovery and doesn’t feel as oppressive – it’s displacing from attention but not availability.
The 90s and 00s revivals running right now also feel like they come from a different place. They vibe more driven by young artists than older gatekeepers, and often they’re seizing on trends which were basically hated by critics or editors at the time. It also can seem like it has a different motive – like the world is freaky and there’s an underlying cosiness to recalling trashy pop music from when you were a kid.
That said, the fact that catalogue music (defined as music released more than 18 months ago) is at its highest ever level and still rising makes me wonder what it’s like to be an artist starting out now, with streaming and social platforms soaked in nostalgia for different eras. With 100,000 new songs released every day I don’t even know how you get noticed, which is bleak as hell. Honestly and extremely predictably, it kinda makes me nostalgic for gatekeepers. And know that past me hates me.

And it's kinda imp.
Why did Duolingo do this?
I mean it's obviously so that incredibly important media companies like Shit You Should Care About report on it and in turn give them free marketing (hook, line, and sinker Luce) but also... WHY DID THE DUOLINGO TWITTER ACCOUNT DO THIS!!!
I'm all for being horny on main - it's basically our entire Twitter feed atm (thx Matty Healy) but there's something about brands doing it that is SO DAMN JARRING. Maybe it's because I actually picture that lil owl typing this shit out, or maybe it's because I know it's probs someone just like me behind the account. And actually, the more I think about, the more I rate the freedom that their social media manager has in their role, and that's kinda the key to success on social media!!
