My fave TikTok niche: Dads cooking on their Blackstones
Iβm in the mood to write about the things that make me happy/ comfy at the moment, and for whatever reason, right now my comfort TikToks are Dads (and I follow a few Mums too actually) cooking shit on their βBlackstones.β Blackstones are a brand of griddle, which is like a big flat hot-plate, and there are a bunch of people on TikTok who cook for their family, their friends, their kids, their kidβs sports teams - itβs just the most wholesome things ever (and if youβve ever found yourself on BlackstoneTok then you know what Iβm talking about.)
This is the first Blackstone vid I saw:
Breakfast on the @blackstonegriddle β www.tiktok.com
And I also love this dude:
Breakfast!!! β www.tiktok.com
And as I was doing my research I came across this great interview/ podcast published in The Verge last year, which argues that every company - even an outdoor appliance company - is a tech company, and talks about how the Blackstone CEO took the influencer/ creator economy seriously and truly carpe-diemeβd when his shit went viral on TikTok.Β
Hereβs a wee excerpt:
βYouβve got an app that requires software development, youβre producing a TV show that runs on that. Youβve got Facebook, which is where youβre seeing your best return. Youβve got a team of people making YouTube videos. Youβve got TikTok, where it seems like thereβs a lot of awareness, maybe not a lot of return. How do you balance that set of investments?
This is not a sophisticated answer, and you may cringe at my answer, but itβs just really kind of a gut feeling, in all honesty. We know that if we go out and do the right thing, the customerβs gonna look at it and say, βOh, that wasnβt staged. Theyβre not doing this to try to get back in my pocketbook,β and that kind of breaks all the rules for advertising and social media spend, right? Youβre trying to look at ROI, you know, βWe spent $50, we better generate $150 in sales,β and all of these kinds of numbers.
Iβve just kind of thrown that all out the window. Iβm gonna spend this much money on my marketing, and we gotta figure out the best way to get our message out to our customers. Thatβs how we do it. We have a certain amount of money to invest in our marketing efforts, and weβre gonna go spend that money.β
I did not expect the convergence of griddles and tech to be so fascinating!!
Elon Muskβs pitch deck:
The New York Times got a peek into Elonβs pitch deck for his dream version of Twitter, and although I havenβt seen it myself (rude of him not to send it SYSCAs way) hereβs what he says he wants to do:
Quintuple revenue to $26.4 billion by 2028
Rely waaaay less on revenue from ads: βAdvertising would fall to 45 percent of total revenue, down from around 90 percent in 2020. In 2028, advertising would generate $12 billion in revenue and subscriptions nearly $10 billion, according to the document.β
Produce $15 million in revenue from a payments business (like tipping and shopping, which right now brings in⦠not much)
Increase average revenue per user by $5.39
Reach 931 million users by 2028
Have 104 million subscribers for a mysterious X by 2028. This mysterious βXβ thing is buzzy - itβs a new product, but we donβt know what it is. And 104 subs to something that doesnβt exist yet isβ¦ kinda huge.
Hire 3,600 employees β after shedding hundreds. Apparently when he βtakes overβ he want to get rid of a bunch of people and hire a bunch to focus on the engineering.
North Korea heard SYSCA had covid... and copied us
North Korea has just entered a national lockdown after announcing their first 'official' cases of covid-19. The BBC report that these cases are in the capital, Pyongyang, but the government has not disclosed how many cases there actually are.
Apparently, Kim Jong-un is in emergency talks to prepare their response, but this is kinda too little too late considering North Korea has not administered a Covid-19 vaccine programme to its population and has rejected offers to have both the Chinese-made Sinovac vaccine and AstraZeneca jabs made available.
I really should note that observers of North Korea believe that the virus has been in the country for a long time, they just haven't reported on it.
And you can read more about that here.
(Maybe they got FOMO of the SYSCA team all having covid, because this timing is just too coincidental... Are you reading the daily newsy Kim Jong-un? I hope you're a β¨SYSCA supporterβ¨ if so!)

How do you pronounce groceries?
Upon reflection I realise that there are actually a BUNCH of different ways you can pronounce groceries - I hope you all just picked the one that was closest to how you say it:
62% of you say gross-eries
38% of you say grosh-eries
I get it! For a lot of us it's more like gross-rees or grosh-rees but u get what I'm sayin xxx
