I fucked up, again 😩
Become a ✨SYSCA SUPPORTER✨ and get access to our weekly 🍿Culture Vulture newsy🍿, our special 📚bumper book list📚 and our 🎶SYSCA playlists🎶 (or just support us coz u love us 🥺)
My angels! This morning you are getting a more muse-y edish (as opposed to a news-y edish) because my fuck-up yesterday (read on to find out what I did) inspired me to write about the beauty of a low stakes error, and also Bel is here to Chime In early as tomorrow is a ✨special edish✨
I also climbed a mountain yesterday and basically SLID the entire way down as there was ❄️snow❄️ that was 💦melting💦 but look at this view!
And I thought you'd like to know that I've added four new ANTHEMS to my playlist (which you can access if you're a monthly or annual supporter)
Dotted Lines, King Princess (probs gonna be one of my all-time faves)
Chemicals React (A&A Version), Aly & Aj (I used to listen to this as a kid, but the re-recording? Elite)
Got Weird, Dodie (this sounded fucking incredible in my noise cancelling headdies and tbh her voice low key gives me ASMR. Also it's about kissing girls which is cool)
Stick Season, Noah Kahan (I think I'm late to the party on this one but it's the only song that could mention covid and still be gorgeous. Also I live for a folky/ country banger, idc what you say!)
If you fuck with these songs then you'll love my playlist. And if you don't... well there's a good chance you'll vibe with either Ruby's or Liv's!!

The beauty of a low-stakes error
Something happened yesterday, which inspired me to write about one of my favourite parts of this newsy - how often I fuck up in it. After yesterday's edish, a bunch of you kindly let me know, (which I adore, don’t ever stop) that Hugh Grant was not in fact in the Christopher Nolan film ‘The Prestige.’ And of course he wasn’t! Hugh Grant is purely reserved for dishy romcoms on Sunday afternoons! Hugh Janus- ah - Jackman was in 'The Prestige' because he’s The Greatest Showman and was basically built for that role. But you spotted something that I do basically every day, and every time I do it, it makes me love the space we’ve built even more - I make low-stakes errors - like, all the time.
Honourable mentions are:
the fact that I cannot figure out how to say things like ‘me and Liv’ or ‘Bel and I’s’ or Squish’s and me’s (ok I’ve never said that one) properly
also when I pasted the Taylor Swift private jet story twice
Or that time I posted a Keke Palmer tweet under the heading for Danny Devito

As you can see, it happens a lot (these were just off the top of my head!), but as I said earlier: making low-stakes errors is one of my favourite parts of writing this newsy every day, and that’s for a few reasons.
1) Because (up until now) it’s never really been in a huge way.
It goes without saying that there will come a day where I will make a massive slip of the finger in a Really Important News Story and type something that I didn’t mean/ hadn’t fully thought through. And that’s okay, because this community is graceful and kind, and hopefully, we’ll all learn from it! But up until now, my mistakes have been minor - comical even - and I feel like it’s really taught me how to take feedback and light criticism (even when it’s low stakes, there is still a part of me that audibly yells “I’m such a fucking idiot!” every time I mess up - Flo can vouch for this) so when I do inevitably fuck up in a big way, at least I’ll be sorta ready!!
2) It reminds you all that as much of a machine as I am, I AM ALSO HUMAN!!
The goal of this newsy is to be incredibly authentic/ transparent and #relatable - and what’s more relatable than making typos? Or getting words wrong? Or mis-pasting a tweet? We all do it!
3) It makes you engage with me, which is my fave thing!!
I can’t even describe how much I love getting emails from you all every day! As much as it makes me rage at myself when I get the 30th “I know you’ve probably been told this, but you did -insert stupid thing here-” it’s also so cute and cool to get to chat to you all, even if it’s in response to one of these emails. Because who knows what we’ll end up talking about!
4) Maybe I’m just saying I love making errors to let myself off the hook?
This could also be true. Maybe it would be better if I took some courses in grammar, spent a bit more time proofreading, or tried to slow down so that my brain could catch up with my fingers. But the fact is, it’s just me here, every morning, talking to you, and trying to get this newsy done before my actual work day starts. And I get the feeling you don’t want me to change???
All of this is to say, I will keep being imperfect, keep making you giggle at my mistakes, keep silently raging at myself every time you email me, letting me know about another silly thing that I’ve done, but keep on doing it every single day anyway.
And if you like my mistakes, maybe consider becoming a SYSCA supporter (or if you want to help fund some grammar courses for your mate Luce???)
PS all errors in this section were to prove my point.

New episode of Culture Vulture! — open.spotify.com
A big week on the mics this week! A Bridgerton lawsuit as drama-heavy as the show itself, Kris Jenner's PR machine strikes again, as Kim and Pete cover up for Khloe and Tristan's new baby, and Beyoncé has found herself in a few dramas after her new album rollout (which was also her most conventional roll out yet.) You are NOT going to want to miss this one!
Bel Chimes In: On Hair
This section is written by my crush, the refreshing-as-a-house-chardonnay-on-a-steamy-day, Bel Hawkins. You should check out more of her beautiful words here.
Absolutely gorge being back here each Thursday and this week confirming the rumours are true: Luce and I are real friends. I'm a real-life gal. We work in the same office space some days of the week, are twin flames and sometimes dress identically. These Chimes come from real convos and hilarious realisations we have in our REAL LIVES, and one day we decided we’d share with you. And… here we are!
This week, bringing you one of my more basic Chimes not gonna lie, but hey, I’m going to lean into it and sometimes it’s what the people want on a Thursday morning that feels like Friday [luce note, Wednesday this week, sorry Bel!] Plus, I’ll always try and leave you with something to muse on cos I love you
It’s about how much I hate my hair.
I’ve been cursed with thin, flat, lifeless hair, and honestly, I cannot tell you how many mornings I wake up and dream of a simpler existence. The things I would do to roll out of bed with some body. Some texture. Some life! Literally anything a bobby pin could grip into.
I grew up riding motorbikes, dressing in bogan polarfleece / Hawaiian shirt combos, and trying to catch eels on sticks (sounds idyllic, gonna go with it) in short - a world where having good hair didn’t exist. Now my adult life is fraught with this thin-haired hell!
It reminds me of a story a poet friend of mine told me about - when she and her sister went into the African desert on a research trip for five days. It was dusty, it was rough, it was beautiful, she said. And do you know the best part about it? She asked. On the drive back, my sister and I looked at each other and said, I’m so happy, I haven’t thought about my hair in a week.
The larger lesson here, and the point I’m getting at, is how important it is that we have experiences without vanity. Without phones taking pictures that might end up somewhere. Without pressure to be chic or deliver a look. To be pared back, in the wild or at least unjooshed for a period of time. I think it’s very good for us. For me, this manifests in my aforementioned worn-out women weekends with my gals but can be as simple as mincing round your house in a soft pant, not washing your hair and seeing anyone.
Because at the end of the day, you’re a person with a beating thing in that body of yours and superficiality aside, it’s who you are in the lawlessness of the wind that oculars. That’s what McLeod’s Daughters (Iconic Australian farm drama series for Northern Hemispheric subscribers) taught us anyway.

Now, some notable deaths:
Olivia Newton-John, 73
Our beloved Sandy from Grease passed away peacefully in her home yesterday, and John Travolta's Instagram post for her did make me tear up, yes. Here's what he said:
"My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever!
Your Danny, your John!"
Carlo Bonomi (the original voice of Pingu), 85
I didn't expect this one to hit as hard as it did either, but I adore Pingu (as many of us do), so this was a sad one. My friend from France actually sent this to me saying that for some reason it reminded him of me. Well, Gabriel, you were right - it's because I love Pingu. Carlo, your 'noot noot' lives on in me.
