Is a hotdog a sandwich?
Mōrena lil shits!!
Ok so don’t hate me, but yesterday I had my first proper introduction to BTS. Of course I know who they are, how amazing the ARMY can be and the way they’ve changed the fandom game - but I hadn’t watched much behind the scenes/ get to know the members type of stuff. Anyway, yesterday me and my pal had a bottle of Rosé and really got to know them. AND I’M OBSESSED 🥺 (also they just seem extreeeemely hard-working??) Anyway, I felt like this was important information to share.
PS, we have a new episode of The Shit Show for ya (to everyone who’s been asking for an update on Tonga and Ukraine/Russia, they’re all there!)

Neil Young is removing his music from Spotify to protest Joe Rogan’s misinformation
Go off Neil!!! In case you missed it, this week Neil Young posted an open letter where he basically asked Spotify to pick between him, or Joe Rogan:
“I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines – potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them. Please act on this immediately today and keep me informed of the time schedule.”
“With an estimated 11 million listeners per episode, JRE, which is hosted exclusively on Spotify, is the world’s largest podcast and has tremendous influence. Spotify has a responsibility to mitigate the spread of misinformation on its platform, though the company presently has no misinformation policy,” he wrote, adding:
“I want you to let Spotify know immediately TODAY that I want all my music off their platform … They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.”
And… Spotify picked Rogan, so Neil Young is saying CYA!
I mean, you’ve already seen me discuss the 270 doctors that wrote an open letter telling Spotify to… idk, do something about the dude you’re paying over $100m to be on your platform, and now Neil Young has to get involved??? Madness.
As per usual, Ryan Broderick from Garbage Day has some things to say about this:
First, as Steve Sladkowski, the guitarist for the band PUP, who are great, tweeted, “It rocks that Neil can take his music off S*****y but the fact remains that the vast majority of us can’t afford to do that because the (very meagre) royalties are one of the few ways to cobble together any semblance of a living.”
And anti-Spotify activist and musician Evan Greer tweeted, “the Neil Young / Spotify thing is interesting. on one hand, fuck Joe Rogan, Neil rules & i dig the righteous leveraging of celebrity to pressure a company to do better. On the other, i'm not sure i want a world where artists with the most streams get to demand others get the boot.”
Points we’re made, but good on Neil Young for taking some sort of stand. It's a shame Spotify chose Rogan over Young - but who's surprised?
Jay-Z teams up with Meek Mill, Kelly Rowland and others to block rap lyrics from being used in court
I saw this story about a week ago and have only gotten (hate that word, lazy word) around to writing about it now. Basically, Jay-Z and a bunch of other rappers/musicians are pushing for prosecutors to stop using rap lyrics in attempts to prove guilt during criminal trials. They’re backing a bill called “Rap Lyrics On Trial” which was proposed in November by state senators Brad Hoylman and Jamaal Bailey, to prevent prosecutors from citing lyrics except in cases of “clear and convincing proof” of a link between lyrics and a crime:
“The right to free speech is enshrined in our federal and state constitutions. The admission of art as criminal evidence only serves to erode this fundamental right, and the use of rap and hip-hop lyrics in particular is emblematic of the systemic racism that permeates our criminal justice system.”
Fat Joe, who’s backing this with Jay-Z said:
“Our lyrics are a creative form of self-expression and entertainment – just like any other genre. We want our words to be recognized as art rather than being weaponized to get convictions in court.”
If Talking Heads can sing “Psycho Killer” and Bob Marley and the Wailers (or Eric Clapton) can sing “I Shot the Sheriff’ without them being taken seriously in a court of law, it kinda seems like there’s a bit of a double standard here, so I’m super interested to see where this story goes!
If you like coffee, you’re in trouble
In case you didn’t know, the world is heating up - and a new study says that “key coffee regions in Brazil, Indonesia, Vietnam and Colombia will all "drastically decrease" by around 50% by 2050.”
It’s been covered pretty widely in the past few years, but coffee growth is hella susceptible to high temperatures. In the lowest temperature scenario, there would be a reduction of 76% in Brazil's most suitable areas for coffee. In Colombia, it would shrink by 63%. I love coffee and I love Colombia (not to flex but I lived there for a while and consumed SO much coffee and went to a bunch of coffee farms) BUT CAN YOU SEE HOW MUCH THIS SUCKS?
