I've been writing this newsy for three years, here's everything I've learned

Now, you don’t write a newsy to just about 100k people almost every day for THREE YEARS without learning a couple of things, so let me be one of those annoying tech bro’s for a second and let you in on some of the things I’ve found out…

You won’t be doing it alone (and you shouldn’t)

Even though Rubes and Liv are off living their best lives, SYSCA is not something I do alone - the beating heart of this thing is comprised of so many people!!! It’s Bel, London Laura, Squish, Normy, Dunc, Abby, Dyl, Sacha, Kim, all my besties, everyone who writes for me over on

, and of course, all of you.

Yes, I might be the only full-time employee, but the rest of you, well you’re full-time legends. Not a single day goes by that I feel alone, and I think, more than anything, that’s why I keep doing this.

Turns out you’re actually allowed to take breaks

You might remember a vintage chime where Bel, in that perfect way that she does, wrote that you “break, or take a break.” At the beginning of this year, I broke in a huge way, which meant I had to take a month off. And the best part? You literally didn’t care. Yes, you cared about how I was doing, but you didn’t care that I logged off for a second - you let me, and then you were there to celebrate when I came back, merry and medicated and ready to take on the world again.

I was always afraid of going offline or disappointing you or getting behind, but seeing the outpouring of love and understanding you gave me has changed it all for me. Work-life balance? I love her!

People will come for the news, but stay for your friendship

I’m so fucking proud of the way this community has grown up with me. It feels like we were all young and woke (and possibly even quite triggered - probs rightfully so) in 2020, and since then we’ve grown into this wholesome group of nuanced thinkers who aren’t interested in cancelling people or things, just hanging out and learning about stuff together. What I love even more is that this has become about soooo much more than the news. It’s about my day, your weekend, my latest crush, your new promotion - it’s about our friendship. There are a lot of people out there who could give you the news, but not a lot of people who will send me an email in response to a newsletter telling me your favourite cafe in Canada for Turkish eggs.I’m obsessed with us.

The reason I’m still doing this, three years on, is because of YOU 𓆩♡𓆪

Not to be seriously earnest on main, but the reason I still wake up and do this every day is because of all of you, and especially our SYSCA supporters.

You’re my angels who’ve normalised paying for the media you love and I really hope you:

1. Feel how much time/ effort/ love goes into writing/ creating/ close-friending/ book clubbing and making this all happen for you

2. Realise you’re doing the absolute best thing you could possibly be doing to make sure SYSCA keeps existing: you're PAYING FOR IT!
