Nickelodeon said JoJo CYA ✌️
Today we're starting with a BIG shout out to the 18 new ✨SYSCA SUPPORTERS✨ who joined us over the weekend - I see you & I love you! If you wanna support what we do, you can become a ✨SYSCA Supporter✨ here!
Mōrena lil shits!!
Yesterday was a HUGE day for SYSCA!!! We rolled out phase one of our snazzy new branding (which you are all being SO nice about - I love you!!!) We also rolled into a shiny new office with our besties at ✨The Spinoff✨ & ✨Daylight Creative✨ so we are feeling both v profesh and v grateful to all of our SYSCA supporters (you are literally who we’re relying on to help us work in an actual office, so THANK YOU! AND PLEASE NEVER STOP SUPPORTING US 🥺) Rubes Liv and I are usually terrible for making time to celebrate SYSCA wins, but last night we went out for dinner & just reminisced/ thought about the future and it was so so nice. I thank my lucky stars every day that the universe threw us together as jegging/braces/ankle boot wearing kids. They’re literally geniuses & I love doing this with them every single day.
Enough of that - I forgot to tell you all that I watched CODA in the weekend!! AND I LOVED IT! After seeing it take home a bunch of Oscars (including best picture!!) and seeing Troy Kotsur’s speech, I was dying to watch it. For those who are unaware, the story follows a family who are all deaf, except the daughter, Ruby, who is their only hearing child. Ruby is also a brilliant singer, but there’s obviously that tension of her family never being able to hear her sing + relying so heavily on her for their livelihoods (she interprets for them) that it makes for such a soul-enriching/ hurting experience when she wants to go off and live her life. It’s on Apple TV and I would soooo recommend that you go and watch it.

The Kids Choice Awards said JoJo CYA to JoJo Siwa
JoJo Siwa - who was literally the Kid of Choice at Nickelodeons Kids Choice Awards for YEARS (the chokehold she had on an entire generation of kids is so wild!!) wasn’t invited this year, despite the fact that she was nominated for ‘Social Music Star.’ JoJo took to Instagram to address the rumours about why she didn’t attend:
"A lot of you have been asking me why I'm not at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards tonight, and the answer is very simple — I wasn't invited," Siwa said in her video. "I'm not sure why, but I just didn't get an invite."
So what’s changed since last year?
Well, JoJo came out and became honestly a bit of a queer ✨icon✨ (she also just chopped off her signature blonde locks) and people are thinking that Nickelodeon isn’t happy about that.

Another factor could be that back in September of 2021, JoJo called out Nickelodeon for preventing her from performing certain songs on her D.R.E.A.M. tour, which began in January 2022.
"Working for a company as a real human being treated as only a brand is fun until it's not,” she said.
Whatever the reasoning is… WHAT IS IT WITH AWARDS SHOWS AND BEING THE WORST????
Elon Musk is not joining the Twitter board, actually
It seems that yet again, we’ve all been taken for a ride by Elon Musk - not to space tho, just to embarro-town. After reading all the hot takes one could possibly handle about Elon joining Twitter's board, it turns out he's ✨decided against it.✨ Here’s a statement about it from Twitters CEO:

So he’s not joining the board and since this story will probably change again in 420.69 seconds, I’m not gonna waste my time thinking of any more takes on it. Here’s one last one tho:

I lied, this is the last one:

A woman in Texas faced murder charges for a ‘self-induced’ abortion
Content warning: abortion
No shit! A 26-year-old woman from Texas - Lizelle Herrera - was arrested last week for allegedly causing "the death of an individual by self-induced abortion.” It’s not clear whether she performed it on herself or if she was helping another person, but since being arrested she was held in custody on a $500,000 bond in Star County jail. Since then, a DA has said that she won’t be facing prosecution for this - but that’s kinda… not even the point.
In case you need a refresher, Texas has some of the most fucked up abortion laws in the world. If you assist someone in getting an abortion after six weeks (no matter if you’re a doctor or a taxi driver) you could be sued. And, if you dob someone in you’ll receive a cash prize! One thing that’s important to note here is that the woman receiving the abortion is exempt from this law, so if Herrera did this herself, this murder charge wouldn’t have even made sense. The point though, is that Herrera (or whoever she was helping) had to go to these unsafe and traumatising lengths to access an abortion in the first place… and then she was literally arrested for 'murder.' But that’s 2022 in Texas baby!
'People Probably Want to Kill Us': The Oral History of Aqua's 'Barbie Girl'
For some reason I read this interview with some members of the band Aqua and… actually really liked it!! Probs because it finally gave an explanation for why 'Barbie Girl' - this terrible yet weirdly timeless song exists. Anyway, here’s their reasoning for writing the song:
Rasted: When we were writing songs for the first album, I went to an art exhibition at a store in Copenhagen. They’d taken a bunch of Barbie dolls and made a planet out of them. It looked like a big, round ball. It made me think of, “Life in plastic, it’s fantastic.” I thought that was a great line. Then I wrote, “Come on, Barbie, let’s go party.”
Here’s some dramas over those infamous vocals:
Rasted: There was a lot of back and forth when we recorded the vocals. Lene wanted to take it down a notch. She thought it was too high. If she was going to do it live, it was just ridiculously high. There was a lot of fighting about that. But we just said, “This just sounds out of this world. Please, let’s just do this. We can always take it down one note live. Nobody is going to notice.”
Nystrøm: Everyone believed it was pitched up in the computer, but I really did it.
And here they are in defence of their ‘sexually suggestive’ lines, like: “I’m a blond bimbo girl in a fantasy world,” “Dress me up, make it tight, I’m your dolly,” and “You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere.” (I liked this bit, coz they all said slightly different things.)
Dif: The message is that it’s OK to be the person you are and look the way you look and be confident in that. You don’t necessarily have to have plastic surgeries to be a better person. All these metaphors in the song were taboo to talk about, but we came out with a tongue-in-cheek way to present our song. It’s a pop song, but it’s also a song about how it’s OK to be who you are, love who you are, and be yourself.
Rasted: It was, of course, a song about plastic surgeries. Other parts of the songs were just sexual. When we had the lawsuit from Mattel, which came later, the lawyers made us change the story. They said, “Please don’t say it’s anything sexual.” But we were not really trying to make a statement. We were just trying to write a fun song.
Nystrøm: It’s tongue-in-cheek. It’s pop music. If you want to see the layers to it, there’s all the layers you want. But we kind of took the piss out of the Pamela Anderson Baywatch perfect picture with silicon boobs. We wanted to take the piss out of that kind of perfect girl. That was the main thing we discussed. We didn’t say it very often, but that was the main thing behind it.
Weirdly, I think you should go and read the rest!!
