First of all how the fuck is it August already??? I know it’s not a ✨hot take✨ to say that time is moving incredibly swiftly (pre-cursor to today’s main event) but it must be said. Where is the time going???
This weekend I have been in the wonderful and windy Wellington!!!! SYSCA were finalists in the Impact Awards which is the coolest shit ever!!! It was so nice to be surrounded by some fucking incredible people and I got to take my lil bro (and bestie) Benny along for the ride which made everything all the more hilar (he’s like my mini-me - you’d all love him.)
On Sunday a hungover Luce sat in a cafe gathering herself (why I’m talking about myself in third person now I have no idea) but I was joined by my crossword-loving bestie Ellen (who you’ve read about here) and her lovely boyfriend Ra who indulged in our nerdy hobby with us (with the help of many scones and many coffees.)
Then we lay in bed and re-watched Hearstopper (because of course we did), caught up on Love Island, went to watch Elvis again (it’s just as good the second time, and this time I had way more context after me and Liv’s Culture Vulture episode on it!!) I must admit I dozed off in the movie theatre (which is something I never do but the room was SO warm and the seats were COMFY.) Now I’m feeling 💘jazzed💘 for another week (I still have v sore wizzy teeth but dentist tomorrow) and I’m heading to Wānaka on Wed for a lil work-away-from-home moment!!

Taylor Swift didn’t have a good weekend on the internet after she topped a list of ‘celebs with the most CO2 emissions.’ The list was put together by a marketing agency (but pulled its data from the Twitter account CelebrityJets), and here’s what it said about Taylor:
“Taylor Swift might be today's pop princess, but Yard's research found that Miss Swift is the biggest celebrity CO2e polluter of this year so far. Racking up a total of 170 flights since January, Taylor's jet has amassed a vast 22,923 minutes in the air – 15.9 days. Quite a large amount considering that she is not currently touring.
Taylor's jet has an average flight time of just 80 minutes and an average of 139.36 miles per flight. Her total flight emissions for the year come in at 8,293.54 tonnes, or 1,184.8 times more than the average person's total annual emissions. Taylor’s shortest recorded flight of 2022 was just 36 minutes, flying from Missouri to Nashville.”
Don’t worry though guys, Taylor’s team has reached out to Rolling stone saying that these flights were not all Taylor: "Taylor's jet is loaned out regularly to other individuals. To attribute most or all of these trips to her is blatantly incorrect."
And also on the list are: Floyd Mayweather, Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Jay-Z, Floyd Mayweather, Kim Kardashian, Travis Scott, Mark Wahlberg and Kylie Jenner (among others.)
Naturally, the internet has done what it does best and kicked off. I can’t help but think that yes, this story is Bad with a capital B - and particularly when you add the shock value of Taylor Swift’s (of all peoples) jet amassing the most miles, but we knew this was happening - we knew celebrities used private jets, and with knew it wasn’t good for the environment. If this was a lesser-known celebrity, who didn’t have the chokehold (or that we didn’t hold to the incredibly high expectations that we hold Taylor to) would the internet be this mad? Would this have been such a story? If it was someone we ‘expected’ it from, how would be react? Just some kai for thought, as the internet continues to internet <3

Two BIG music moves to discuss this weekend - first we have a new Beyoncé album (which is actually just one part of a 3-part project.) I listened to this album on my bike on the way to the office on the one good day of weather we’ve had recently and honestly… I walked into the office and felt like an absolute confident #girlboss thanks to that album. So defs listen to it if you’re in need of a confidence boost!!!
And now for Maggie. I’m obsessed with Maggie Rodgers and her new album is everything I’ve been waiting for!!! I listened to this on the plane ride to Welly and I’m not gonna lie, I had a little cry listening to ‘I’ve Got A Friend’ because it’s literally the way I feel about all my friends and it’s BEEN ADDED TO MY SYSCA PLAYLIST so if ur a ✨SYSCA supporter✨ you may have already heard it 👀👀

Turns out the song he auditioned with first (before 'Isn't She Lovely) (for the record, she is) was ‘Hey Soul Sista’ by Train (one of my least fave songs in the world.) It’s giving huge Louis singing ‘Hey There Delilah’ energy because he goes in SO confident on the wrong key… but he’s so charismatic and cute that u just gotta love him. George Jetson was born yesterday!
Did any of you watch the Jetson’s growing up? I have distinct memories of sitting with Squish and watching them fly about in their lil hovercrafts (for those who haven't seen it, it's a show about a family who live in the 🔮future🔮). Anyway! According to a viral post George was born on the 31st of July, 2022 (aka yesterday), and Snopes has even gone ahead and fact-checked it for us (that’s how imp this story is.) And it's true! It’s really giving… ‘we’re living in the future’ vibes.

I will say, I'm yet to commit to waking up and watching a race (Aug 29th tho - I'll be up for the Belgian GP) but I am LOVING getting up in the morning and sitting with my silly lil coffee and watching my silly lil f1 highlights. Qualifying for this year's Hungarian GP slayeeeeed the house down, and the actual race has just happened (boutta go watch all the highlights), but here are the results if you wanna know!
