📣Taylor Swift is THE cheer captain📣
+ NYC is flooding & Lego tried to ditch oil, hit a brick wall 🧱
I’m not even sure how I’m supposed to put the last three days of my life into words. Bel and I were lucky enough to go over to Lyon with gorgy newsy reader/ marketing extraordinaire Lauren for what might just have been the best and buzziest weekend of our lives. First of all - a shout-out to her work with the All Blacks. What I didn’t realise (and you may not have either) was how deeply the teams care about the spaces they visit when they travel, and about bringing a bit of our home to wherever they go. This year, the way they showed this appreciation was by gifting pae noho whakairoto (carved bench seats) to cities in New Zealand and France. The idea was that on the field, the bench is the backbone of the team, and off the field, it’s where you come together to debrief and hang out. Bel and I spent a day walking around the beautiful park in Lyon where the boys gifted one to the city the day before we got there, and to have something that’s been so beautifully carved (by the official New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute in Rotorua) all the way over there was SO spesh. So shoutout to Lauren for bringing this to life, and bringing a bit of NZ to Lyon (including Bel and I!!)
In the meantime, between, oh, watching the ABs beat Italy 96-17, Bel and I were complete and total ratbags (this is the way she described us and I’m taking it.) Whether it was rarking up the supporter bus on the way home, looking totally out of place in our colourful dresses in a sea of Adidas, or us not being capable of having a ‘normal conversation’ (for example, someone tells us they move around a lot and we ask them: so, are you afraid of stability?) we were ON one. Of course, we also ate bread and cheese and pastries (Bel took two trips to the gluten-free boulangerie), minced around the city marvelling at how there are LITERAL PALACES on every corner, and drunk enough wine and limoncello spritz’s to give us a light hangover each day. A trip to remember!
I also just want to say a MASSIVE thank you (and love you) to everyone who messaged me or thought about Jimmy yesterday. Weird to be having such a huge up during a time of huge down, but it’s life, and it’s how he’d want us to be living it, that’s for sure.

Taylor Swift is THE cheer captain
Is it even a SYSCA newsy if I don’t mention Taylor Swift?? Honestly, I couldn’t help it if I tried. Today I have an update on Traylor (is that what we’re calling it?) She brought a BUNCH of her besties to watch the Chiefs’ latest game in support of Travis Kelce, including Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Sophie Turner, Hugh Jackman, Antoni Porowski and Sabrina Carpenter. Firstly - I’m obsessed with the way she’s adopted Sophie Turner, secondly, I’m obsessed with the Swiftification of football (sorry), and thirdly, genuine question - have we ever seen a person in pop culture with the impact that Taylor Swift has?
Meanwhile, NYC flooded
The world is either on fire or it’s flooding, and there ain’t no two ways about it. This weekend, New York got the latter with flash flooding causing Subways to close, sea lions to escape and a state of emergency to be declared. Hope you all stayed safe out there if NYC is your home, and hope we can all see that climate change is, idk, real?
Lego tried to ditch oil, hit a brick wall
Damn! Danish Toymaker Lego has abandoned its most high-profile effort to ditch oil-based plastics from its bricks, because it’s new material actually led to higher carbon emissions.
In 2020 the company kicked off efforts to replace its plastic bricks and start using sustainable materials, but it has proven super hard to find a material that is environmentally friendly, and gives the same “colour, shine and sound” of oil-based bricks.
Testing and development is going to continue though, and they still aim to hit their goal by 2032!
