Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” Bill
Ok, so Florida has this new fucked up bill, which is officially titled the "Parental Rights in Education” bill, but has been nicknamed the "Don't Say Gay" bill - and it’s currently moving through the Florida Legislature.
The proposed bill says that school districts can't "encourage classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students." Which is genuinely so upsetting.
The bill would also give parents the ability to sue schools if they believed the schools violated any provisions of the law.
Then, just a few days ago, the original Florida House sponsor of the bill withdrew an amendment to “require school principals to disclose a child's sexual orientation to parents within six weeks if they find out a student has come out as other than straight.”
Yes - for a time there was actually an amendment to the bill which would require principals/ schools to out students who thought they had a safe space.
Here’s what the Biden Administration is saying about it:

Between this and the book bans in the US, it feels like we’re moving backwards when it comes to just letting kids be who they are. Don’t make these kids feel unseen, unheard or unimportant. Keep them safe, it’s literally your jobs!!
The Violation Of Celebrity Sex Lives + Why You Shouldn't Watch 'Pam & Tommy' — open.spotify.com
We start off with an analysis of Jake Gyllenhaal's new Esquire profile - and the first time he spoke out about Taylor Swift rerecording Red - before a quick chat about Coachella who will now have no Covid restrictions in place for attendees.
And then, the main event: we talk about Pam and Tommy, the ethics of releasing a show about a leaked sex tape (without the consent of Pamela Anderson!), and take a wee trip down memory lane about the way the media has violated celebrities since basically the beginning of the internet.
Equal pay for the US women’s soccer team
After a six-year battle, the U.S. Soccer Federation and members of the women's national team have reached a $24 million settlement agreement over equal pay, ending one of the most high-profile legal cases in sports history.
A little bit of context: Back in 2016, five American stars (led by Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe) complained to the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission about their pay, and sued three years later, seeking damages under the federal Equal Pay Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
More context: The U.S. women have won four World Cups since the program’s start in 1985, while the men haven’t reached a semifinal since 1930.
It’s probs important to note that this deal will only be completely finalized once the team and federation ratify a collective bargaining agreement - but assuming that all goes smoothly, the money will be distributed to 61 players, with a smaller chunk going to a fund which will support players' post-career goals and other charitable efforts.
Here’s what Megan Rapinoe said about the settlement:
“For our generation, knowing that we’re going to leave the game in an exponentially better place than when we found it is everything. That’s what it’s all about because, to be honest, there is no justice in all of this if we don’t make sure it never happens again.”
From Tumblr girl to engineer: How the platform inspired a generation of women to code
I’ve BEEEEEEEEN saying this!!! This is just a really good piece with a bunch of testimonials from young women who grew up on Tumblr, teaching themselves how to code via making ‘pale blogs’ and it’s just so up my alley, so I’m sharing it with you.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., and Daveed Diggs are getting back together
I’m losing my mind. It’s just been announced that Hamilton stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., and Daveed Diggs are gonna open 2022 SAG Awards - and this is literally the only thing that could make me care about these awards. Rubes and I are truly obsessed with Hamilton (espesh the OBC) and Daveed Diggs is straight-up one of my biggest celebrity crushes - he’s just so COOL (Andy Samberg ur up there too.) That’s all.
Do you say ‘sour cream’ or ‘soured cream?’
Damn this got some outrage. First of all, the way this poll came about was that one of my pals from work said ‘did you know that in the UK sour cream is called ‘soured cream???’’ and I was like NO SURELY NOT. So I googled it, and sure enough:
Anyway, 95% of you say ‘sour’ and 5% of you say ‘soured.' Either way, they’re both just really terrible names for any product.
