A cup is a broad generic category whereas a mug is a specific type of cup.

Like boat vs yacht. A boat can be a yacht but isn't always a yacht, whereas a yacht is always a boat.

This! Mugs are usually meant to hold hot drinks, so they have a handle so you don't burn your hand. But mugs are a kind of cup. Like the square/rectangle thing, too.

I truly, truly felt my body lift off my chair with each sentence of Bel's chime in today. Obsessions are so so so important. Corpos call it "passion". Sporty ball fans call it "loyalty". The rest of us call it what it is: OBSESSION.

Also and btw, the difference between cups and mugs is quite simple"

Mugs = handles

Cups = no handle

Oh god I love Bel’s chime about obsessions so much! I became a Harrie last year out of nowhere (literally had a dream about him and woke up like, ✨he has visited me✨ and became obsessed) and it is just so JOYOUS! The connection and happiness and focus and interest and pure pure pure love that I get out of an obsession is a truly unrivalled feeling 🥲

A cup is for cold liquids and a mug is for hot liquids and its thicker and has a handle so you don't burn yourself. Also yesterday I had a whole conversation with someone about the difference between a juice glass and a cup, and really I think the only difference is that a juice glass is smaller.

mugs have handles! cups are silly id rather just call it a ✨glass✨ because that’s what it’s made of (unless it’s plastic i suppose)

It's weird, I'd definitely say "hey check out this mug" as opposed to "hey check out this cup"...and yet I'd never say "Would you like a mug of coffee?"... Having said that, if I had to define it more formally then I'd say I think of "mug" as a larger vessel, one whose handle I can fit three fingers through, whereas a "cup" would be something smaller.

a mug is cute, usually a pastel color or a very neutral color, has more width than a cup, is thick, usually ceramic, and ALWAY has a thic handle. a cute phrase (like the one on my favorite mug "you are brewtiful") is optional but usally present

a cup is a basic bitch with a striped/polka dot/plain color and is slimmer than a mug

mug hot, cup cold

hard agree with Heidi^^

A mug is a type of cup with a handle (usually pretty large - larger than a traditional “tea cup”) and a cup would not have a handle. Material doesn’t really matter in the world of cups, but I think mugs are almost always ceramic/stoneware/glass

I wanted to say mug = hot, but then I thought about all the times I’ve eaten cereal out of mugs and then decided it’s unfair to put mugs in a box like that!

So I am settling on saying all mugs are cups, but not all cups are mugs. Like all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares.

A cup is smaller (think teacup) and has a bowl shape to allow hot liquid to cool quickly. A mug is larger, and often has straight sides to retain heat as the volume is larger, and it may be drunk over a longer time. Both are for hot drinks, have a handle, and are usually ceramic (but can be made of other things). For cold drinks use a tumbler (usually made of glass).
