Is META making us follow Trump and JD???
Ok so the other day, after receiving more DMs from you all than I could keep up with, I made a post about the fact that people were being ‘made’ to follow Trump and JD. Here are just a few of the DMs/ comments I got:
Those posts ended up going… kinda viral:
And then I got an email from someone at Instagram saying:
We came across this shityoushouldcareabout post, and just wanted to share a statement posted by Andy Stone at Meta on Threads:
"People were not made to automatically follow any of the official Facebook or Instagram accounts for the President, Vice President or First Lady. Those accounts are managed by the White House so with a new administration, the content on those Pages changes. This is the same procedure we followed during the last presidential transition. It may take some time for follow and unfollow requests to go through as these accounts change hands."
I get it, and to be honest, I’m not a conspiracy theorist, so I believe it. The bit that I think rubbed people the wrong way was that when they tried to unfollow them, they couldn't!!!
The New York Times answered this question for us:
When I try to unfollow these accounts, the apps won’t let me. What’s up with that?
This is where it’s not you, it’s Meta.
The company said it “may take some time for follow and unfollow requests to go through” as the account transitions occur. It is possible that the company is receiving such a high volume of unfollow requests during the transition that it is running into errors processing them all.
Meta claims it will be sorted out soon, but declined to go into detail on why it was happening.”
Anyway, you can think what you want now that you’ve got all the info. But here’s my final thought on this:
If you’re interested in some light reading, here’s every executive order Trump has signed so far ˙ᵕ˙
In a move that has surprised literally nobody, Trump wasted no time signing a wave of executive orders aimed at reversing Biden-era policies. Here’s a little luce TLDR:
He’s reinstated the "Remain in Mexico" policy for asylum seekers, paused refugee resettlements, and is pushing to end birthright citizenship (something that’s already getting hit with legal challenges.)
On the energy side, he’s declared a "national energy emergency," rolling back regulations for fossil fuels and halting offshore wind projects.
He’s pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement… again.
He’s dismantling federal diversity and inclusion programs, bringing back hiring freezes and stricter rules for government employees, and has targeted transgender rights, including potentially banning them from serving in the military.
He’s pardoned January 6th rioters.
Oh, and he’s pulled the U.S. out of the World Health Organization.
And this isn’t even the half of it - the full list of bullshit is here xx
Oscar noms are out!!!
I don’t want you having to do a million clicks to find them (stay with me, plz!!!) so here they all are!!

So many of us have grown up having everything available and accessible to us all the time - which is AMAZING for so many reasons, but there is a cost to free things - even if you can’t see it.
In a world that feels more mystifying by the day, where journalists are constantly being laid off, and misinformation spreads faster than a leaked Harry Styles song, finding media that you trust, understand and actually want to read is so important.
I know you value what I do - so many of you email me saying how much you love the newsletter, thanking me for explaining topics you might not have heard of, and telling me how much it means to you that you’ve got a friend on the other side of this thing (🥺🥺🥺) If you believe in paying for the media (or the person???) you love, then please consider becoming a supporter.

I had a 100% success rate for unfollowing when I deleted all my Meta accounts.
If you were not following potus, Vice President or first lady accounts before then there's no reason changing hands should cause people to "accidentally" follow them. That's pure bullshit. Also, these are a few special accounts that should be able to be set up to work differently from other accounts. In my opinion, when they change hands all previous follows should go away Unless you've specifically said you want to permanently follow that account. If Meta can build AI, it can build FB and these accounts to work properly, so don't let them gaslight you and lie to you about why this is happening.
