Angels! I’m writing this to you slightly drunk after experiencing Wellington on a VERY good day. Why does it feel like it’s been so long since we last spoke? How have you been? My body is currently turning against me - I’m about to have three weeks of face-to-face meetings with people I’d reallllly like to impress, so of course, a cold sore has just popped up on my lip. Love that for me! Every worn-out-woman knows this feeling. So if that’s you, you’ve got my full empathy.

Israel took Al Jazeera off the air and raided their offices

Yesterday Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet voted unanimously to close Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel before police raided the broadcaster's office in Jerusalem.

Why did it get shut down?

Basically, Israel has branded Al Jazeera as a 'mouthpiece for Hamas.’

What has the reception been like?

This shut down has been criticised by a number of human rights and press groups:

“The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) said they had filed a request to the country's Supreme Court to issue an interim order to overturn the ban.
The group said that claims that the broadcaster was a propaganda tool for Hamas were "unfounded", and that Sunday's ban was less about security concerns and more to "serve a more politically motivated agenda, aimed at silencing critical voices and targeting Arab media".
The Foreign Press Association (FPA) urged the Israeli government to reconsider its decision, saying the shut down of Al Jazeera in the country should be "a cause for concern for all supporters of a free press".

So many of us have grown up having everything available and accessible to us all the time - which is AMAZING for so many reasons, but there is a cost to free things - even if you can’t see it.

In a world that feels more mystifying by the day, where journalists are constantly being laid off, and misinformation spreads faster than a leaked Harry Styles song, finding media that you trust, understand and actually want to read is so important.
