✿⊰𖡼𖥧𖤣❀ BEL CHIMES IN: On Burnout ❀𖤣𖥧𖡼⊱✿
This section is written by my all-time crush - and co-author of our debut book Make It Make Sense - Bel Hawkins. Each week Bel comes here to chime in about the things she’s been loling at, yearning for, or totally mystified by. Luckily for us, she also writes our Sunday advice column ‘Wait, But What?’ for all our paying supporters who want to make sense of the world!! Upgrade your plan to get her newsy here!
Burning out? Burning down? Don't go down with the ship!
Hello my crushes! Writing you this from a tiny quioqsue in the park near my house where I can both see the river and a giant monument where a lot of famous people are apparently buried. Are ghosts real? Is some of their genius lingering around in the atmosphere? Who's to say.
This week, we got a question for our Wait, But What? Advice newsy, and I thought I'd touch a little on it here because we get comments about this all the time and it's something I really care about: how to avoid burnout.
My friends here and I have been joking, and I alluded to it a couple of Chimes ago, that ambition is out for 2024. It probably comes from riding the wave of Quiet Quitting, Bare Minimum Mondays, Lazy Girl Jobs and all the other Gen Z phenomena that sweep and change across TikTok about work.
But I think there's something larger at play here. It's like we're all collectively exploring the idea of pushing the clutch in on our ambition for the year and prioritising life a bit more instead (rich coming from me, I know, quilling half a book coming out this year, but hear me out). It's so expensive. there's so much going on, to take in, and be conscious of — what is work in the wider scheme of things? Who we are or just what we do? Or some weird in-between. I've been in bed sick this week listening to existential podcasts, can you tell?
I think about the seven types of rest a lot, which are: physical, mental, sensory, creative, emotional, social and spiritual, because it's easy to forget there are more aspects to recuperating than lying down AND I've always hated the idea that you get one holiday a year of annual leave to fully reset. What if we could live a life where that rest and resetting was more.... constantly in motion?
Three quick things I recommend are: ask for help, say no to something — no one who matters should care, and take a gentle stroll with your phone on Do Not Disturb to think about where your boundaries lie with your energy. If you're burning down or out, maybe you're giving too much of yourself?
All of this, obviously, needs to be caveated with how much we need work to survive and pay our bills and life feels like it's never been more expensive than now, and I'd hate for you to picture me writing you this on the deck of a ship sipping an expensive drink giving you advice like 'just don't care as much' when you're like bitch, I'm just trying to survive. We're all just here, standing in front of a bank balance, hoping it gets us through another week. Do your work to the best of your ability, and then go back to your life with the people you love.
My full guide to this to come this Sunday! Like and subscribe. Love u xo
