+ A BIG SALE 𓆩♡𓆪
BEFORE WE BEGIN WITH THE NEWS: A COZZY LIVS SALE COZ THE WORLD IS EXPENSIVE
Angels!! I know I don’t need to remind you, but the syscahood is the most important thing in my life. We’re in group chats, book clubs, each other’s dm’s and dreams and LIVES in what feels like, to me at least, a pretty big way. For over three years now we’ve been sending each other letters, exchanging books and stickers and stories, and god I love you for it.
Over the past few months, I’ve been noticing a lot of unsubscribes for the same reason - times are tough and even though you don’t want to, you’re having to reign in the spending - and GOD do I hear you.
It’s not easy out there - for you, for us, for small business owners and for the people doing the lord’s work who should be compensated more for it (cough, nurses and teachers). The cost of living is fucking us all up - I get it, and I feel it too. In saying that, if we want to keep SYSCA alive, I need you to continue supporting us in whatever way you can (whether that’s financially, or just by commenting cute shit on my stuff), and in turn, I’ll try to do the same for you - being here, day in and out, replying to your emails and making you feel seen, whether it’s from my childhood bed in New Zealand or the floor of an airport on my way to bring you somewhere new.
So, if you can, it would mean the world to me if you’d consider becoming a SYSCA supporter, and in return I’ll just keep trying to make it all make sense for you. Does that sound ok?
Trump is trying to deport a Palestinian activist, despite him having a green card
Wait what?
Yeah, you heard me. Mahmoud Khalil - a Columbia graduate and well-known Palestinian activist, has been arrested by ICE, despite the fact that he has a green card and is a permanent US resident - a move that experts reckon is a violation of free speech rights under the First Amendment.
Why’d he get arrested?
Officially, the government claims he was involved in activities aligned with Hamas, however, there is no clear evidence of him committing any crime. His most notable actions were leading pro-Palestine protests at Columbia University.
Why is this such a big deal?
Well:
it’s a violation of free speech (or the First Amendment) for one. The U.S. government can not legally arrest or deport someone simply for expressing their political opinions.
it’s also cause for concern as it aligns with Trump’s broader promise to revoke visas and deport non-citizen protesters who criticize Israel.
Check out this freaky headline: “Trump calls arrest of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil ‘first of many to come’
What’s the latest?
ICE took him into took him into custody, reportedly acting on a State Department order to revoke his green card. But while they initially listed him as being in New Jersey, his wife (an American citizen who’s eight months pregnant) tried to visit him and he wasn’t there. Now reports indicate that he’s been moved to Louisiana.
What now?
Well, this (like basically everything Trump does) is setting a very dangerous precedent, bringing up questions about whether the government can actually strip residency based on political beliefs.
This moment is not just about Khalil - it’s a test case for Trump’s broader crackdown on pro-Palestine activism. If he succeeds in deporting Khalil without clear legal justification, it could set a precedent for suppressing political speech through immigration enforcement.
In some more heartening news, look at the protesters outside the NYC ICE offices:
Also, nearly two million people have signed this petition for him, and you can too!
Hi bookies!!
This week in the cutest book club on the internet, we’ve been getting through our March book pick, All Fours by Miranda July - a super controversial novel with the most mixed reviews - and we’ve been screeeeeaming at it over on Fable:
And, it’s somehow already time to vote for April’s book club pick (is time flying this year for anyone else wth??). April’s pick is between two highly recommended books by our cute fellow bookies; Margo's Got Money Troubles by Rufi Thorpe & I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman.

More anti gen z slander for you to gobble up if u want
Apparently now we are ‘taskmasking’ in order to do less work? At least that’s what The Guardian would like you to think:
Basically the article looks at the idea of ‘taskmasking’ framing it as something gen z are doing now that they’re being required to return to the office more and more. ‘Taskmasking’ includes tactics like walking around with a laptop, typing loudly, or holding fake meetings to give the impression of productivity.
It’s actually quite funny when you think about it, and kinda feels like something everyone does from time to time.
Actually, let me make it today’s mundane poll:

Arresting polical enemies. Usa Is already a dictatorship
The crackdown on Pro Gaza/Palestine protests etc here in the US has been crazy. They (those who are doing the "cracking") are framing it as Antisemitism. But what about Anti-Palestinian? And how does saying "we shouldn't kill innocent people in Gaza" equate to "Jewish people should die"?? Uggghhhhh
