If you haven’t been seeing 'Deepseek’ everywhere, well done, you live a blissful life that I one day hope to have. But for now, I am going to explain it to you.
What is Deepseek?
Before we get into it, yes, this has to do with AI, because of course it does. Basically DeepSeek - a Chinese tech startup - has caused a stir with its new chatbot. The new AI assistant (think, ChatGPT) quickly became the top downloaded free app on the iPhone store, driven by curiosity around its potential to rival ChatGPT.
Why are people freaking out?
Well, if we believe what is being put out there:
DeepSeek has managed to match the capabilities of American AI leaders, but at a fraction of the cost, which basically upended the stock market
And if we wanna talk about an AI ‘arms race,’ this is really fuelling a bit of economic and geopolitical competition between the U.S. and China

for :We know I’m addicted to words (one of my most common/ favourite compliments is when I find someone with a vocabulary I’m envious of and I get to tell them that) so this newsletter is sooo up my alley. This one was so fucking interesting because it looked at how the slang we adopt on the internet, seemingly harmlessly, seeps into even the most private and intimate parts of our life (thus using all these silly little words is not entirely performative.)
Here’s a lil snip:

According to the adult video website, searches for “demure” rose 133%; searches for “tradwife” are up 72%, and searches for “hawk tuah” went from zero to over ten million.
At first glance, this might not seem that surprising: the words are trending all over the internet. If Google searches are up for all these terms, why wouldn’t they be up on Pornhub as well?”

The Anti-Social Century
Now, as well as being a words girl, I’m a MAGAZINE girl, so I feel absolutely spoilt that at my cousin’s house (where I’m currently writing to you from) they have copies of The Atlantic (my favourite magazine) scattered around the place for me to read. Yesterday I picked up the latest issue, and it was SO Luce coded - the cover was titled ‘The Anti-Social Century’ which just so happens to also be a feature article written by one of my favourite writers, Derek Thompson.
We all know that we’re getting less social as technology gets more intensive and the world gets more expensive (should I trademark that line?) but I liked this piece because it also gave some history as to why third spaces (the bar, the park, anywhere that’s not school or work or home) are dead and dying (spoiler, it was cars, and then TVs, and now PHONES) and what the future COULD look like. Here are some of my favourite quotes:
On bar/ delivery culture
“As we ate our meal, I watched half a dozen people enter the restaurant without sitting down to eat. Each one pushed open the door, walked to the counter, picked up a bag from the bar, and left.
