Shit You Should CAire About 👩🍼
No, that isn't a typo! ➕ Alphabet is laying off 12000 people, NZ's new PM announced, but more importantly - Kylie Jenner revealed her baby's name 🥸
First of all, a HUGE welcome to our 35 new paid subscribers since Bel launched her new Saturday newsy!! I love being on the receiving end and getting to read it with a cup of coffee in the weekend (just like how you all read this one!!)
Before we get into it I wanted to let you in on something new that our paying subscribers are going to be getting: a bonus Friday edish with ALLLLL the links/ recs/ content for you to consume over the weekend. Instead of getting ‘final thoughts’ at the end of each newsy (like you do now) I’m gonna collate them all into a HUGE Friday link dump so you’re never left high and dry. SO, if you love reading through all the links at the bottom of each newsy, become a paid subscriber to get them in a bigger & better way!!
Now, my weekend! I have to say, this was a big and eventful weekend for me. I want to remind you that you are seeing a HIGHLIGHT REEL and you don’t see the days I’m simply doing my washing or cleaning the bathroom, and I don’t for a SECOND want you to think that this is ✨life as normal✨ ok??? I can be a goblin (and in fact was one all of Saturday.)
On Friday night I went to an incredibly luce-coded pop/emo party (I missed the memo on the dress-up part of it and was dressed like an actual child) but it was one of those nights where you know the words to every song (shoutout to Dunc for playing Big Girls Don’t Cry, These Words, & Sex by The 1975) and you don’t feel time passing til it’s 2:30am and you’re in an uber home busting for the toilet. Goes without saying that I was hungover as hell til about midday on Saturday, when I resurrected (thanks and thanks ONLY to a bottle of blue Powerade) and on a whim I bought last-minute tickets to the Red Hot Chili Peppers & Post Malone for that night and for only $75?!
This, my friends, is something I’ll often do (espesh when my mind is a lil altered during a hangover) - I’ll make impulse decisions/ purchases, and tbh I very rarely regret them. I will also say that it’s a bit of a #lifehack to look at tix for a show that hasn’t sold out on the DAY OF, and if you’re going on your own (like me) you can often get FUCKING good seats for solo tickets!! So I got ready and rocked up to the show, but holy shit, I can’t lie to you - I was a BALL of anxiety. Usually, I’m pretty good at doing things alone, but there were just SO MANY PEOPLE (the stadium can hold 30,000 people at capacity) and lots of them were drunk (I was stone cold sober) and I had to walk for AGES into this increasingly claustrophobic area on my own. But I knew it would be fine when I got to my seat….. which someone was in 🙃 After getting help from a lovely person who worked at the venue, I had my spot (with a whole spare seat behind me) and it was centre-stage facing and in row A so no one was even in front of me! Such good seats.
By the time Post Malone came out (and CRUSHED IT in his I <3 Auckland shirt) I was super into it, and after he’d killed his set (and the guitar he smashed on stage and then kindly gifted to the crowd) I braced myself for the Chili’s. And they were…. good, obviously. Flea was iconic and kinda held it together/ stole the show for me, and when they played their bangers the crowd was a sight to behold, but they didn’t play most of the songs I grew up listening to, like: ‘Can’t Stop (my all-time fave), ‘Otherside,’ ‘Under The Bridge,’ ‘Zephyr’ - you know the ones. On my way out a woman behind me said: “that was like using a vibrator that wasn’t fully charged” meaning (I think) that she was stimulated but wasn’t totally satisfied - and that was exactly how I felt. I didn’t regret going (of course not) BUT their set list/ crowd engagement didn’t really do it for me. Anyway, the visuals etc were dope, and they still sounded fucking good.
On Sunday I woke up and we went for a cute beach day with the gals. We swam, got tossed around by the waves, I started reading the second book in the Thursday Murder Club series (pictured below) and we ate fish and chips in the sun - a gorg and glorious way to spend a Sunday!
How was your weekend?? Did you come to the RHCP and feel the same as me? Did you love it? Did you take a risk? Did you have a chill one? I want to know it ALL so lmk in the comments below!!

A shooter in LA killed 10 people
Content warning: Gun violence
Haaaaaate waking up on Monday morning and realising I’m going to have to write about another shooting in America, but it’s 2023 and what else can we expect?
At least five women and five men are dead after a shooting at a ballroom dance studio in the Californian city of Monterey Park, and another ten people are injured. The shooter, who is reported to be an Asian male between 30 and 50 years old is still at large, and officials have not ruled out the possibility that this was a hate crime. (Context: Monterey Park is home to a large Asian community and thousands of people had earlier gathered for the Monterey Park Lunar New Year festival.)
Another shooting took place in the neighbourhood of Alhambra 20 minutes later, at another dance hall, but there have been no reported causalities of that one.
"A male Asian suspect walked into a dancehall with a firearm. Some individuals wrestled the firearm away from him, and he then left the scene."
Police are investigating whether the two are linked. They are also investigating possible links between the shooting and the Lunar New Year celebrations that were taking place in the area on Saturday night.
This story is being updated here as more info comes out.
Is 2023 the year of the layoffs?
If you were part of last year’s ‘quiet quitting’ cohort (which I don’t think you were because quiet quitting was never really a thing) you might be shaking in your boots now because 2023 seems to be about layoffs, layoffs, layoffs baby.
Google’s parent company Alphabet announced that it would cut 12,000 jobs (which is 6% of their global personnel)
Microsoft announced its plans to eliminate 10,000 jobs (4.5% of its global workforce)
In early January, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy revealed that the company was cutting 18,000 jobs (less than 1% of the global workforce, but would amount to about 6% of corporate jobs)
Vox just announced they were cutting about 7% of their staff
This world is getting increasingly scary/ unstable, and my only wish is that if you’ve been affected by a layoff like this you move into a job that feels like it’s serving YOU rather than The Man xxxxxx
NZ has a new Prime Minister
His name is Chris Hipkins, and Squish has been loving keeping you all up to date on him over on The Shit Show’s Instagram:
His caption for this was “How it feels to be a sibling of Luce” and honestly? I loled. If you want more substantial coverage on who Chris Hipkins is (sorry Squish) I suggest you read this. Feels imp to note that he’s a Coke Zero girlie. We also have a new deputy Prime Minister, Carmel Sepuloni, and if you want some more info on her, read this!
Kylie Jenner finally revealed her baby’s name
And if you thought the title of this email was a typo then you missed the news. Her baby - previously known as Wolfe - is now called Aire. Here he is:
And I have nothing else to add!
Today’s mundane poll:
To get a whole week’s worth of final thoughts on a Friday, become a paying supporter 👀
I'm surprised of the results of the mundane poll... My logic is that when you are born on the same date as someone, you say "we share a birthday" or "we have the SAME birthday", which means there can only be 365 birthdays that are shared between all the people. Does that make sense?
The iconic vibrator description - immaculate!
