So the UN Security Council just passed a resolution calling for an ‘immediate ceasefire’ in Gaza
And guess what country abstained from voting?
So, the UN Security Council has just called for an "immediate ceasefire" in Gaza, and instead of vetoing it like they usually do, the US instead, abstained. They were the only country to do so, with all the rest voting in favour.
What does the “immediate ceasefire” actually entail?
Important to note that this is the first time since October 7th that the Security Council has been able to agree on language that demands an immediate ceasefire in a draft resolution.
According to Al Jazeera, there are only two key parts really:
”a demand for an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan leading to a “lasting and sustainable ceasefire” and an emphasis on the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance.”
Update: Israel has since cancelled its planned White House visit this week after the US “failed to block” the vote, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling it a "clear retreat" from the previous US position.
Once again, Trump got what he wanted
You might remember the other day when I wrote about how, like me, Donald Trump couldn’t find $464m to pay his financial fraud bond. Well, lucky for him, now he doesn’t have to! Now, as a judge just ruled, he only has to pay $175m, and has a deadline of 10 days to put up the amount.
