What’s going on in Syria?
Ok so I’m going to explain this in a way that hopefully makes sense to you. Syria has been under the control of Bashar al-Assad and his family for over five decades, and those years have been marked by strict rule and a devastating civil war. Now, after a quick and effective offensive launched by rebel forces (taking control of major cities, including the capital, Damascus) Assad has stepped down and fled the country, signalling a major shift for Syria. It’s a moment filled with both hope and uncertainty as the country looks to move forward. Shall we break it down?? Ok cool.
Who is Bashar al-Assad?
Bashar al-Assad has been the president of Syria since the year 2000. His family had been in power since the 1970s, and he ruled with very strict control. Many people in Syria felt oppressed because his government used violence and fear to keep people from speaking out or demanding changes. And what just happened?
After years of fighting (a civil war that lasted 13 years), the rebel groups who opposed Assad's rule managed to take over the capital city of Damascus and most of Syria. This forced Assad to resign and leave the country. It’s a big deal because Assad seemed untouchable for decades, thanks to help from powerful allies like Russia and Iran. Why is this important?
Well, for the people of Syria: Many see this as a hopeful moment because they feel free from a leader who controlled them through fear. But there’s also a lot of worry - without Assad, it’s unclear who will take charge next. If no one steps up to lead, different groups might fight each other for power, which could cause more chaos.
For the world: Assad’s fall is surprising because he held onto power for so long with strong support from countries like Russia. His exit could change the balance of power in the region.
What’s the reaction?
Some Syrians are celebrating because they believe this is the end of an era of oppression.
Others are nervous about what happens next since Syria has many different groups with different goals, and no clear leader has emerged.
Hope this helped, more context here!
Notre Dame has risen from the ashes: it’s in its phoenixing era
Five years after the devastating fire that almost led to its collapse, Paris' Notre-Dame cathedral has reopened. It took thousands of experts - from carpenters and stonemasons to stained glass window artists - who worked around the clock for the last five years, using age-old methods to restore, repair or replace everything that was destroyed or damaged, but they’ve done it.
“Notre-Dame has been meticulously restored, with a new spire and rib vaulting, its flying buttresses and carved stone gargoyles returned to their past glory and white stone and gold decorations shining brightly once again.”
Oh and also, Trump and Elon were there:

So many of us have grown up having everything available and accessible to us all the time - which is AMAZING for so many reasons, but there is a cost to free things - even if you can’t see it.
In a world that feels more mystifying by the day, where journalists are constantly being laid off, and misinformation spreads faster than a leaked Harry Styles song, finding media that you trust, understand and actually want to read is so important.
I know you value what I do - so many of you email me saying how much you love the newsletter, thanking me for explaining topics you might not have heard of, and telling me how much it means to you that you’ve got a friend on the other side of this thing (🥺🥺🥺) If you believe in paying for the media (or the person???) you love, then please consider becoming a supporter.
