I feel like men do this a lot with whatever/whoever is popular with women as time goes on. I remember back in the day men pretending to love Katy Perry when she became the it thing when I was in college (I know there are more but my elder millennial brain is broken this morning). This is bigger though because the Taylor Swift fandom is massive and can be intense. I, however, forced my husband to listen to only Taylor all day every day the entire week before my concert on June 9, and now he is like "um I am in love with the song Cruel Summer, and Karma, and like everything on 1989, why didn't you make me listen before?" I was 18, it was the summer after my high school graduation when her single Tim McGraw was released, I've been a fan for almost half my life (17 years), Taylor is in heavy rotation on my mixes, I think my husband just never listens lol. He said "next time she goes on tour I'm going with you" which is huge because he never goes to concerts with me lol. I told him he has to wear a shirt that says "where's the scarf, jake?" and he said "um no, we're wearing sequins"... he's the best lol
great article!! hmm, i mean i think the tay-trapping and "pick me" girl are quite related because you don't really know what is genuine so you either respect them because of their actual interest or you acknowledge the fact they're doing it for views. very interesting!
I've been seeing these for about a month and I kept thinking wow... I remember in 2014 saying I was a massive 1D fan and getting absolutely humiliated at a party once... by the same dudes that are now n posting harry styles songs on their Instagram stories! Not sure if I call it growth or something else since most pictures include themselves on the beach shitless to the sound of golden... but each to their own I guess !
My husband has been an outspoken 1D fan since the beginning, he said that his friends always made fun of him but he didn't care. The rare dudes are out there!
I have a guy friend who’s a real swiftie and just the other day we were discussing her albums and both obsessing over how Red TV is her best album! So when it’s real it’s great to have a swiftie friend, especially since with guys it can be a sign that they’re sexist if they hate Taylor for no reason. 😅 But I’ve also noticed people pretending to like her online for views and idk how to tell apart the real from the fake. 😕
I’ve noticed this so much too! It’s like my entire fyp is full of these guys. Thee point about women who share the same enthusiasm for typically “male” interests being labelled pick-mes reminds me of the common double standards when it comes to what men can be fans of and what women can. Men screaming, crying, throwing up over the football and their favourite players is fine. But women being passionate about an artist? Gross! I think ultimately it comes down to the bar for men being so incredibly low in terms of what is deemed impressive ...

I love the genuine fans but the others are icky. They're doing it for Harry Styles too
this but it’s those videos of various sports teams (obviously) trying to capitalise on taylor being in their city on the eras tour.
