The weirdest shit we believed as kids
+ Everything we know about the shooting in Auckland, & a new Harry Styles video 🎥
Hi my besties!!! Last night I went to see Oppenheimer and oh my god… for a three hour movie and a girl with no attention span… it really did SLAY. I’ve now seen the Barbenheimer combo and all I’ll say is WATCH THEM BOTH, but if you’re anything like me you’ll want to watch Barbie TWICE (and make all ur dude friends go with you plz.)
I’ve still been deep in nostalgialand as I’m in my childhood bedroom reading through all my old diaries, but one thing I also found (which you’ll hear about on The Shit Show this week) was THIS photo of what someone wrote about me in the toilets at school when I was year 10:
I can confirm that I was the farthest thing from a skank that you could find, and I honestly don’t think I was a bitch to anyone except for my brothers, so don’t worry - I really didn’t take this to heart. Still a mystery as to who wrote it though….
Love u all!!! xxxx

What we know about the Auckland shooting
Content warning: gun violence
A scary morning for anyone in Auckland yesterday - police have confirmed that three people are dead after a shooting took place just after 7am in the Auckland CBD. One of the dead was the 24-year-old offender, who was on home detention but had an exemption to work at the construction site. Six other people were injured (including a police officer) but it’s likely that that number will go up as more victims are identified. The offender had “indications of mental health history,” but it’s been said that there was no ‘ideological motivation’ for the incident. More on this here.
Outrage after women were paraded naked by a mob in India
Content warning: abuse
A video that has emerged on Twitter showing two women being paraded naked by a mob in the north-eastern state of Manipur, has sparked outrage in India.
The assault on the women took place almost three months ago but became public only on Thursday after the video went viral on Twitter. According to a police complaint, one of the women was gang raped. The complaint added that a third woman was also forced to strip but she is not seen in the video.
In response to the video, the police say they have “opened a case of gang rape and arrested a man,” and Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the incident had "shamed India" and that "no guilty will be spared".
For a little bit more context - Manipur (an Indian state that borders Myanmar) has been plagued by deadly violence for over two months, as clashes between the majority Meitei and the Kuki tribal communities have driven the people apart. The women in the video are Kukis, and were assaulted by Meitei men.
Women’s bodies are not a battleground. More on this story here.
All the rumours we believed as kids
The other day I was thinking about that rumour that hit every school I knew, which was that ‘if a teacher didn’t show up to class you could legally leave after 15 minutes.’ I don’t think this is actually true, but honestly, if I’m waiting on zoom call and someone hasn’t shown up for 15 minutes, you KNOW I’m outta there. Anyway, it got me thinking about the other things we all just believed as kids for NO reason (other than because our parents had made it up to keep us in line, or we’d heard it through the grapevine) so I asked you and you brought me some GEMS.
Some of the weirdest shit we believed as kids:
that if a teacher didn’t show up after 15 minutes you could legally ditch school
that Marilyn Manson had ribs removed for… practical reasons
that it was illegal to drive with the interior lights on in your car
that steve from blues clues died by putting crayons/ pencils up his nose
that the pool water would change colour if you peed in it
that eating pineapple makes you… taste good
that you’ll swallow approximately eight spiders in your lifetime while you’re sleeping
that if you had braces and you kissed someone else with braces there was a very high chance you’d get stuck together
that blood is blue in your body until it touches oxygen
that you must be prepared to encounter quicksand in your life… a lot
that if you say “bloody mary” three times into a mirror she will appear
that you will get ‘square eyes’ if you sit too close to the tv
that if someone dies during an exam everyone automatically passes
that if you swallow gum it stays in your stomach for like a decade
that if the temperature got too hot at school you could all go home
that going to the beach while on your period would attract sharks
that the red tellytubby died inside the suit
that if you put someone’s hand in water during a sleepover they’d wet the bed
that you could die/ explore from eating pop rocks and drinking coke at the same time
that sneezing is 1/8 of an orgasm
that you’d get sick if you went outside/ to sleep with your hair wet
that there was a blank panther (or insert other creature) that had escaped and was roaming the hills
that drinking caffeine would stunt your growth
that if you’re making a face and the wind changes it will stay that way
that people put razor blades in water slides
that if you eat a watermelon seed a watermelon will grow in your belly
that if you pop your knuckles/ crack your fingers you’ll get arthritis
that you’ll eat hundreds of maggots each year in your loaf of bread
that crusts make your hair curly
that carrots make you see in the dark
that you have to wait an hour to go swimming after you eat or you will die
that if you sneeze with your eyes open your eyeballs would explode/pop out
Comment any that I might have missed!!!!

Own The Feels: BREAKING UP WITH SHAMEFUL FEELINGS!!
"I was with my ex for just under 5 years when I caught them cheating on me with someone we worked with. I felt shame telling my family and friends what had happened, I felt shame for wanting to try and fix things, and I felt shame for nearly everything in the breakup. It was the hardest time in my life and navigating it on my own was so hard that I felt like everything I did was wrong."
In this week’s episode of Own The Feels we’re talking about shame. Break-ups are very rarely happy occasions - and often we can feel things like guilt and shame, even when we know we did the right thing. In this episode, we help you navigate and alleviate these feelings of shame, with tips on how to feel content with the decisions you made.

The eating carrots makes you see in the dark one has an interesting history - it was propaganda from the British government in WW2. They'd invented radar and didn't want the Axis to realize this was how they could see where planes were at night, so they spread the myth that the pilots just ate lots of carrots 😂
luce oh my god the bathroom graffiti (if you include the ‘urgent news’) IS A HAIKU
