We thought it was about time that we got to hang out and meet (well, Google Meet) each other!! We’ve been through so much together, from chatting about books in our cute group chats, to going through (and remaining in) visa hell, to writing our OWN book (which we need your help on, thanks) and it feels WAY overdue that we actually sit down and have a real life chat.
This hang is open to all our SYSCA supporters, not just members of the Book Club, so come one, come all! Cameras can be on or off (we're not evil) but we'd love to meet as many of you as possible, which is why we’ve picked TWO dates and times, in the hopes that we can get as many of our cross-timezone besties in there as poss. The dates are:

I’ve always loved watching people sing on the internet. As a kid, I watched Megan and Liz and Cimorelli on YouTube religiously, and now as an adult, half my TikTok feed is of people singing in parking garages, in their kitchens, in their backyards - wherever. As an amateur singer with limited knowledge and experience with recording myself on Garageband, I naively thought we could all tell that most of these videos that we’re watching have been edited/ autotuned and reuploaded as if nothing was touched. Apparently, not everyone could tell there was sneaky autotune in there, but thanks to TikTok user @glerndevern (who has made it his MISSION to let people know that they might be getting duped by their fave #songtoker) people are finally opening up their ears to the world of fake live singing, and I for one am loving watching it unfold.

You might be thinking that this is not that deep - and it’s not - but if you’ll let me indulge in some internet theorising for a second, to me this feels kinda akin to makeup filters, photoshop, and other technology that enhances people’s videos to put them just a little bit above reality. Like - it freaks me out when we do things solely to make us perform well on the internet (in all senses of the word) as if that’s more important than what we can do or who we are in real life. Also, I hate to be a hater but I’ve been LOVING watching my For You page discover this and start making their own autotune videos taking the piss out of their fave creators.

I’m sure you all remember Derek Chauvin (the ex-police officer who was convicted of murdering George Floyd) anyway, it’s just been reported that he was stabbed in prison. According to AP News:
“The Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an incarcerated person was assaulted at FCI Tucson at around 12:30 p.m. local time Friday. In a statement, the agency said responding employees contained the incident and performed “life-saving measures” before the inmate, who it did not name, was taken to a hospital for further treatment and evaluation.”
The BBC have since reported that he’s stable.
