Happy Friday to all who celebrate! (And to everyone who’s still experiencing Thursday… you’re nearly there!) Last night Rubes and I went to an advanced screening of Celebrity Treasure Island NZ because our absolute bestie Jane Yee is ON IT!!!! After watching the first ep it was clear that she really solidified herself as a ✨main character✨ and Rubes and I were SO proud!!! If you’re into reality TV, Jane (along with Dunc and Alex Casey) have their own podcast called The Read Pod where no DOUBT they’ll be diving deeper into everything behind the scenes, so it’s def worth a listen.
And now a lil admin note from me - I’m not going to be back in your inbox until next Wednesday! It’s a long weekend up in Tāmaki Makaurau and I’m going to Laneway Festival on Monday (to see Phoebe Bridgers and FINNEAS and HAIM…. AH!) so I’m pre-empting that I’m going be waaaay too hungover to get up at 5am and write you a newsy after that. Just protecting my peace ya know? Meta just announced that in the coming weeks, it’s gonna be ending Donald Trump’s ban, because according to Nick Clegg (Meta's president of global affairs) the public "should be able to hear what their politicians are saying". Who’s claiming Trump as their politician anyway????
I don’t want to dwell on this because I’m not about to teleport us all back to 2020 where Trump ruined our lives and our feeds, but I will say the one thing that’s bringing me hope is that he was allowed back on Twitter and has not returned yet (he probs forgot his password or something.) Fingers crossed that’ll happen for Facebook and Instagram too!
Adult Swim Cuts Ties With Justin Roiland Following Domestic Abuse Charges
Co-creator of Rick and Morty, Justin Roiland, has been dropped by Adult Swim after facing some serious domestic abuse charges (outlined below):
Roiland has been charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit by the Orange County District Attorney’s office. The incident in question against a Jane Doe allegedly occurred in January 2020, according to a May 2020 complaint. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in October 2020. The semi-sealed case was kept out of the public until a hearing January 12, 2023. Roiland, who was present, also is required to attend a scheduled April 27 hearing.
Roiland could face seven years in prison if he’s convicted.
What does this mean for Rick and Morty? Well, it’s going to continue, but as Roiland actually voices both Rick AND Morty, those roles are going to be recast.
Has Roiland responded to these charges?
As well as pleading not guilty, Roiland’s attorney, T. Edward Welbourn, said:
“It is hard to overstate how inaccurate the recent media coverage of this situation has been. To be clear, not only is Justin innocent but we also have every expectation that this matter is on course to be dismissed once the District Attorney’s office has completed its methodical review of the evidence. We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible.”

One thing about Lewis Capaldi??? He’s gonna take the piss out of himself at every opportunity, and last night’s 1975 show was no different. Before he came on stage, the screens flashed saying ‘guest starring… Harry Styles’ and naturally the crowd lost their minds. When the guest appeared though, it was… not Harry. I will say tho, Lewis Capaldi is NOT a let down at all (especially considering the performance he gave.)
Lewis went on to perform Love Story (Taylor Swift) and then Antichrist (a song that The 1975 never ever plays) saying he was ‘sick of performing his own songs’ (he’s on tour atm.) Anyway he SLAYED.
