My angels! I’m currently hunkering down (or is it bunkering down?) because up where we live Cyclone Gabrielle is HITTING, so we’ve been told to stay home and prepare our homes for an emergency. I think the worst of it is coming today and Tuesday so PLEASE stay safe & prep yourself as best you can! For more info on what to do, read this!
As for my weekend though - it was the best EVER. I picked my Mum up from the airport on Friday and drove her to Cambridge because this weekend my uncle was racing at the NZ PowerBoat Nationals at Lake Karāpiro. My uncle races the sickest boat you’ve ever seen (pictured below), the crew is made up of my uncles and cousins (the only people I’m not related to turned out to all be called Dave - there were 3 of them in the team of like 7), and it’s just the most wholesome thing ever. To make things even better, he won the whole damn thing, scoring himself the Masport Cup!!!
I haven’t belly-laughed as hard as I did this weekend in a LONG time. There’s just something about being around a whole bunch of your uncles, aunties, and dudes named Dave, that makes you feel like nothing else in the world matters (except for winning the trophy of course.)
And then you drive home and prep for a cyclone and the real world sinks in. But it was nice while it lasted!

Over the weekend I read this incredible piece in the equally dope newsletter ‘¡Hola Papi!’ all about things the author, John Paul Brammer doesn’t like hearing:
“I have compiled here a list of things that I, personally, dislike hearing. I suspect some of you will disagree, but this is my truth. If you enjoy saying one or more of the items on this list, then fear not. I am not asking you to stop. I am just doing what my forebears did: shaking my fist at the digital sky, for fun.”
John hates hearing things like:
‘Have a Nice Life’
‘Piggybacking Off What You Just Said…’
‘Friendly reminder’
‘Rock Star’ (specifically in the corporate world)
and a bunch of other things with Very Funny commentary so you should go and read them all
But I thought I’d use this as a chance to make it about me (and Bel) and share some of the things we hate hearing/ reading:
‘twas (in any circumstance, but espesh in Instagram captions)
Social Justice Warrior (espesh with it has anything to do with SYSCA)
‘pulsing' or ‘pulsating’ ANYTHING
defiantly when they mean definitely
‘this is not shit I should care about’

Harry slayed at the Brits
Not only did Harry Styles win EVERY BRIT award he was nominated for (Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Pop/R&B Act, and Album of the Year), he acknowledged his privilege in his speech (cleaning up THAT Grammy oopsie), took a shot on stage, kissed Lewis Capaldi, and most importantly ACKNOWLEDGED NIALL, LOUIS, LIAM, AND ZAYN (typing those names was so easy because I still have my shortcut on from when I had my 1D obsession at 15 and made it so that if I typed the first two letters of their names it would auto-correct to their full names.)

More unidentified flying objects have been shot down
Three more unidentified flying objects have been shot down over North America this week (one was over Canada) and they’re thought to be part of a ‘crew’ of balloons, similar to the first one we saw from China. Information on all of these feels a little bit murky/ clunky/ not entirely clear, but here’s what The New York Times have said about it:
American intelligence agencies have determined that China’s spy balloon program is part of a global surveillance effort designed to collect information on the military capabilities of countries around the world, according to three American officials.
The balloon flights, some officials believe, are part of an effort by China to hone its ability to gather data about American military bases — in which it is most interested — as well as those of other nations in the event of a conflict or rising tensions. U.S. officials said this week that the balloon program had operated out of multiple locations in China.
