My darlings!! Sorry I was absent again - I went to watch Gracie Abrams (loved it, LOVED her opener Ashe, LOVED her cover of Liability), sprained my ankle on the way out of the concert thanks to my platform docs, wrote about trumps first 100 days, slept for like a whole 24 hours, and am now snuggled up in my dressing down dealing with the most severe winds Pōneke has seen in a decade. Yay.
The only upside of having both extreme weather and the embarrassment of being a 27-year-old with an injury that makes it hard to walk, is that it gave me an excuse to get stuck into our book club pick this month, BABEL!!!

A male contraceptive implant is showing real promise (finally)
Ok so this might actually change the game: scientists have developed a non-hormonal male contraceptive called Adam (yes, like the dude from the Bible). It’s a water-based gel that’s implanted in the sperm ducts and blocks sperm from being part of the semen - kind of like an IUD, but for testes.
In early trials, it worked for two years straight, with no sperm detected and no serious side effects reported. It’s designed to dissolve over time, meaning fertility should return - though that part’s still being tested in humans.
It’s early days, but scientists say this could be a legit alternative to condoms and vasectomies. The best part? It’s temporary, potentially reversible, and doesn’t mess with hormones. AKA: shared responsibility might actually be on the table.

NEW LORDE ALBUM
Ok so I did let out a chuckle when I saw this pop up in my messages this morning:
Turns out she wasn’t just texting me to call me a virgin, she was ANNOUNCING HER NEW GODDAMN ALBUM. Here’s what she said about it in her newsletter:
“THE COLOUR OF THE ALBUM IS CLEAR. LIKE BATHWATER, WINDOWS, ICE, SPIT. FULL TRANSPARENCY. THE LANGUAGE IS PLAIN AND UNSENTIMENTAL. THE SOUNDS ARE THE SAME WHEREVER POSSIBLE. I WAS TRYING TO SEE MYSELF, ALL THE WAY THROUGH. I WAS TRYING TO MAKE A DOCUMENT THAT REFLECTED MY FEMININITY: RAW, PRIMAL, INNOCENT, ELEGANT, OPENHEARTED, SPIRITUAL, MASC.
I’M PROUD AND SCARED OF THIS ALBUM. THERE’S NOWHERE TO HIDE. I BELIEVE THAT PUTTING THE DEEPEST PARTS OF OURSELVES TO MUSIC IS WHAT SETS US FREE.
COMING JUNE 27”
I’m so excited.
We’re getting a Desperate Housewives spinoff???
Apparently so! It’s going to be called Wisteria Lane and it’s being developed by Disney’s Onyx Collective. Kerry Washington (!!!) is executive producing through her company Simpson Street. It’ll follow five new characters (described as friends-slash-frenemies) navigating their own chaos on the cul-de-sac. Think new generation, same desperate energy.
Marc Cherry - the OG creator - isn’t attached (yet), though he’s reportedly been toying with the idea of a 1960s prequel. Eva Longoria is keen for something, anything, but also joked she’s “slept with everyone on the street already” so… maybe time to hand over the wine glasses?

Tbh I'm very tired of all these spinoffs. It's just a reflection of the entertainment industry's unwillingness to take risks and spend money on new ideas. There are soooo many talented people out there and yet we are bombarded with everything v2.0 v3.0 escapism bullshit that costs an absurd amount of money and resources (LotR 🙄) and contributes little to shared cultural production, instead of new media that actually captures and interprets the era we are in now and imagines and projects other possible futures.
Gah … wouldn’t trust a bloke to do contraception properly. Not a lot on consequences for them if they fuck up their pill taking.
