Good morning darlings!!!! First of all - lol - sorry about the confusion in the latest newsy where the heading said I was still in Canada touching grass. I am not, in fact, still in Canada, but I am, in fact, still an idiot! I’d forgotten to remove it from the scheduled email, that’s all.
Anyway, I am slowly coming back to earth (slower than I anticipated actually!) had a bit of a heckers week last week for more reasons than one, but mostly because I was celebrating one of my besties who was just named the best young winemaker in our region and now has to go and compete to become the best young winemaker in the COUNTRY (a huge deal because we live in a place that makes some fucking insane wines.) Anyway, as we know, it’s very important to celebrate your friends’ successes and make sure they get all the red hot validashe they deserve, so snaps for Nick!!!! In that same breath, our very own Liv headlined her FIRST-EVER GIG over in London and as much as it kills me that I couldn’t be there, their band (Not My Wife) SLAYED, and I got an excellent debrief and review from Flo, which made me feel as close to the action as I could.
All of this to say, go and celebrate your friends today plz!!!

Allez Titouan!
Sometimes the stars align and you find yourself having lunch with a bestie in London who is off to the Olympics for a week, and instead of leaving you to seethe with jealousy, he says “I’ve got spare tickets to the Canoe Slalom, come to Paris for the day”. Why NOT go to a whole other country for twelve hours to watch a sport you only found out about on tv the day before. Which is how I wound up on a Eurostar with my passport, day pack and some sunscreen.
Paris is turning it ON this week. Whatever you thought of the damp, trippy Opening Ceremony, the weather is now flawless and the city full of Olympics fans. No actual Parisians, mind. They’ve all evacuated the nonsense, renting out their apartments and leaving the blocked off city streets oddly quiet. Going to the Stade Nautique was so fun. Every step of the way volunteers with giant pink foam fingers pointed (literally) you in the right direction. The vibes were immaculate. The stadium did not have an ounce of shade, but it had fans from every conceivable country.
We passed our extra ticket to a stranger through NZ House, and wound up making a new friend in Catherine, an Irish woman who had been the Black Ferns Olympic liaison all week. She showed me proudly that Portia Woodman-Wickliffe had smashed her phone.
Finn Butcher, our Kiwi kayak hope, heartbreakingly didn’t qualify out of the semi, so we became fans of every other athlete. The Czech fans next to us taught us to scream “Pojd’! Pojd’!”. The French fans were deafening chanting “Titouan! Titouan!”. We groaned right along with them when he missed gold by 0.20 seconds. We cheered the Italian winner when he collapsed to the ground in joy.
Every four years the Olympics gives us a whole new way to connect as a planet: falling in love with the Norwegian swimmer housing chocolate muffins, the effortlessly cool South Korean shooter, the Italian gymnast sponsored by parmesan cheese. It was absolutely unreal to be there in person. Time to find friends in Brisbane with couches to crash on for 2032.
The UK has had about a week of anti-immigrant rioting
Have you been following what’s been going on in the UK? If you haven’t, let me tell you - it’s not good (when is the news ever good these days tbh.)
What’s been going on?
After the knife attack that killed three young girls last week, the UK has been enveloped in violence as crowds “spouting anti-immigrant and Islamophobic slogans” have been clashing with the police. Over the past week, since the attack, Britain has seen some of its worst violence in years, leading to nearly 400 arrests.
“The disturbances have been fueled by right-wing activists using social media to spread misinformation about a knife attack that killed three girls during a Taylor Swift-themed dance event.”
These rumours that circulated on social media - which have since been debunked - alleged that the suspect was an asylum-seeker or a Muslim immigrant.
